Camp gym, Friday afternoon

May 23, 2008 13:01

Jaina had been pretty dedicated in her training for a while now, but she had to admit that she'd stepped it up since getting to the cabins. Every day she seemed to be doing something, whether it be in the gym or salle or the flight shed. Maybe she was just working out frustrations or something ( Read more... )

Convinced to not let himself slack off this weekend like he did last weekend, but having at least enjoyed sleeping in like he figured any normal teenager should on a day without workshops, Cal dragged himself into the gym eventually. Since someone was already there, he decided to skip the warm up of forms for the sake of saving himself the embarrassment, and headed straight toward the weights. He wasn't too terribly surprised that the person already there was that Jaina girl, though, and he greeted her with a lift of his chin, and, hey. Even a lift of his hand, too, before taking to the bench.

"Small school," Cal figured. "My last one was like that. Small. Limited sports. Which ones we got here?"

Not that he was interested, of course. He decided against mentioning that he played field hockey, even if it seemed that Jaina would be privy to the fact that it was mostly a girl's sport. Better to be safe.

"Football and cheerleading," Jaina replied, taking another pause from hitting things. "One to play, one to cheer them on, I guess."

"Basic staples," Cal observed, shaking his head. "Nothing I'd be good at."

Actually, since he started working out, he might be able to launch a pretty good throw. Not that he ever intended on trying, but it was a thought.

"I just don't get it," Jaina admitted. "I've never been huge into sports in general, though. Let's blame that."

"Not into sports?" Cal asked, with a mild tone of mock shock in his voice. "Miss Egregiously Competitive?"

"I have sparring for that," she answered, but she was smiling.

Cal snorted, which messed up his pacing a little, but that just meant he could try a slightly quicker one. "Because beating the shit out of other people is lots more logical than sports."

"It's not a question of logic, it's me not liking rules very much," Jaina clarified. "And most of my sparring is done with a lightsaber anyway. Much less brutal than beating on someone."

Usually.

"Safe to assume," Cal asked, "that a lightsaber is exactly what it sounds like?"

"If you're thinking of a sword with a big glowy blade, yes, it is," she answered. That was twice she'd used the word 'glowy' tonight.

Cal preened as much as a guy sprawled out on a bench lifting weights could for his associative aptitude. "Okay, so...explain how fighting someone with a glowy sword is less brutal than a good honest punch to the face?"

"It's completely different, unless you play dirty. There are forms to it, and it's just a different style of fighting. Also, usually less blood," she said.

"Less blood? Why, 'cause it cauterizes the wound as you're hacking off an arm?" Cal was being both sarcastic and...not.

"Got it in one," Jaina said, kicking the bag again. "Also, in four years I have yet to hack off any arms."

"Pretty impressive track record," Cal had to admit. "I feel much safer."
