Ursa Major Campfire [after classes]

May 15, 2008 14:03

After a long sparring session with Jaina in the salle and and even longer shower (he was going to miss the unlimited water around here), Luke assembled some food made for sticks--marshmallows, hot dogs, weird Rebel rations that Yoda had always made fun of--and stretched out in front of the campfire ( Read more... )

Adah was finding herself almost painfully bored with summer; it didn't help that the whole time, in her head, there were all the lists of things she would have been doing if she'd have gotten that internship. Holing up in her alcove only got her so far (to be specific, it got her exactly as far as page 121, from going backwards, in her guide to ornithology, approached backwards, because she was thinking of potentially taking up birdwatching again if only to kill time), and she was actually getting rather restless about the whole mess. So she risked another social encounter by slipping out, emerging from the cabin, notebook clutched against her chest. Seeing Luke there was a bit of a relief; they hadn't talked in a while, but, hey, she didn't hate him and they didn't have a sordid past, which was enough to make her decided to go ahead and sit down. She set the notebook on her crooked lap and observed the available food indecisively for a moment before choosing what looked the most substantial, a hot dog.

Luke beamed happily at her as he toasted something kind of gray and vaguely hot dog shaped over the fire.

Yoda hadn't been wrong to wonder how anyone got big eating food of that kind.

"Without classes, there's a lot of time to kill," he commented.

Once she was able to find herself in a comfortable lean forward, slightly favoring the left, of course, Adah poised the hot dog over the flames first and then slid her eyes in a slow, dull sort of gaze toward Luke. Her eyebrow shortly follow, lifting slightly, and her expression made it entirely clear that a lot of time didn't seem to cover it well enough. Excessive, massive, gargantuan. Great big black expanses of time already dead but needed to be killed again and again and again. If she believed in limbo, that cool quirk of her brow suggested simply, this would be it, utterly and completely.

Yes. A lot of time. Excellent way to put it, Skywalker.

But there was a slight, faint ghost of a sardonic grin to match, as well.

"Have you found a way to fill it?" Luke asked, still smiling. "I'm thinking of learning how to knit."

No, he wasn't.

"How do you do, Luke?" Peter asked, taking a seat by the fire.

Luke grinned. "Very well," he said. "We had a wedding where no one lost any limbs--I wasn't sure it would actually work out that way. You?"

"It's impressive," Peter admitted. "And none of Rory's friends decided everyone was from an insane asylum." He grinned back. "I couldn't be better."

"That's probably because a lot of them were just as nutty," Luke decided. "There was a guy selling t-shirts." He glanced over at Peter. "Did the squirrels get their news right for once on Tuesday?" he asked.

As promised on Lana's list, Isabel turned up with everything needed to make banana smores.

"Hey," she smiled, settling in next to the fire.

"Hi," Luke chirped, grinning. "Oooh. What did you bring?"

"Bananas and all kinds of things to stuff into them," Isabel said, spreading out a towel and setting everything up on it.

"The way I figure it, the bananas are healthy treat for a change." If you squinted and could find the banana under the mass of melted chocolate and caramel.

"I could do with some healthy," Luke agreed, adding a ridiculous amount of chocolate to his banana.
