On Dreamwidth, Moving, Polls, etc.

Apr 17, 2017 15:59

The polls closed two days ago, and by a far-greater-than-the-Turkey-referendum-or-the-US-election margin, Move has won - with 21 for votes and one against. This means we're going to begin the process of moving the game to Dreamwidth, which we hope to complete by May 3rd, three days before the summer semester Welcome Picnic ( Read more... )

Just a reminder, soniaroadsqueen's LJ Juggler works for DW, too!

A note about the future Dreamwidth friending list that I only remembered just now, and that people will probably like: the admin console still works for adding friends (with no limit per day) because the DW admins can comprehend the concept that it's not possible to spam someone via you reading their journal. So we'll be able to go back to "Copy this, paste it here, click go, and you're good" and poor lovely never_dull won't have to keep trying to update her app to overcome the many ways LJ breaks their own code.

The commands are a tiny bit different, because DW has things separated out into "read" and "give access," but we'll write the friending list text up to accomplish all of that, once we have a completed list to work with.

This will be awesome!

It also means I won't have to go pestering my friend who's a DW coder anymore going, "do you have any idea what LJ could have broken THIS time?"

Aaaand because I keep thinking of More Things:

When you're done copying journals over, whether current characters or former characters that you just want to preserve, please please don't delete the old LJ journals, no matter how cathartic it might feel?

While journals, entries, and comments will all port over, regular old HTML links to other LJ entries are still going to link to LJ entries, and there's no easy way to mass-convert them, because the entry-numbers don't match between the two sites. Which means if you delete the LJ version of a journal, all of your old linkdrops and large parts of other people's, as well as past radio posts, will become useless.

(This also means that we're going to need to update the big FH Index and the internal links between various admin posts to point to the new DW versions. Which will likely take quite a while, so please bear with us on that one, when you find some informational posts linking to LJ, and some linking to Dreamwidth.)

And an error that I just had come up importing alumni accounts (or as just happened, when I changed an account password) --until you have agreed to LJ's new TOS for each account, LJ won't let you export to DW. It's what "Term of Service Error" means.

Hi, apologies if this was answered elsewhere but I want to make sure I understand. I know you're only asking active journals be moved to DW, but is there any benefit for archiving purposes to creating a Dreamwidth journal for characters I do intend to drop? Like, in the ideal scenario, would you want Dreamwidth copies of characters' journals even if they're no longer in play so that the old threads are preserved?

I chose not to mention that in the post because moving to DW is a sometimes arduous process and I don't want to put pressure on anyone when it's not necessary - but I would love to see more people port over their older accounts for archiving purposes, prettying up the imported archives of FH, etc. I will definitely be doing that personally.

Gotcha! That's kind of what I guessed. I will go ahead and try to do that then! Now, if I create Dreamwidth journals for characters who've been out of the game for a while, i.e. not listed in the directory or the survey post, what's the best way to notify you guys of the usernames? Email, or a comment on the survey post?

You can leave a comment on the poll, but as long as you claim your OpenID, we don't really *need* to know - all your comments in the comms will be claimed automatically and so anyone wanting to go back and read your character's archives can just go to your DW journal from there.
