Urban Survival - The Uglier Side of City Living, Wednesday, Period 2

"Hookay," Sparkle sighed, looking over his classroom and giving them all a wry smile, "I'm guessing you guys have probably noticed by now that I've been sort of squirming away from just straight-up suggesting you use homeless shelters. And the reason for that is because, while in theory they're amazing, and having a place to rest your head on a ( Read more... )

It's long and kind of depressing and Sparkle probably missed something. But it's a start.

Tip's eyes slowly got wider as the lecture went on. She'd definitely dealt with some of this -- when almost the entire population of the United States was crammed into one state, you got a lot of the same 'tons of people crammed into a small space' issues that Sparkle was mentioning -- but being 11 and adorable meant she'd had lots of volunteers to shield her from some of the nastier elements. Too many volunteers. Many of whom had no idea how to deal with a precocious black child used to living on her own. But still, between them and having a car, she hadn't been too badly off.

And she hadn't ended up with lice.

Other options for shelter, perhaps? Or strategies for keeping safe if you ever have to put yourself into this position?

Anything you might want to share with the class is awesome.

"I mean, I guess you could try squatting instead?" Tip suggested. "But I'm kinda thinking that could be a whole class by itself. Or -- several."

"Oh, it will be," Sparkle agreed, nodding. "I've got experience with that one, too."

Such a worldly kid he'd been. Worldly and angry.

Well. That was what the world did to you.

"I guess doing that you'd still have to deal with other people, too." Tip sighed. "The other people are really a big part of what makes this whole deal hard, aren't they. Sure, it's nice to have someone to pool resources and skill sets with, but if you don't have someone you can really trust with you, you're kind of just always in danger."

He's gonna be kind of quiet after all that talking.

This isn't an easy class to teach, some days.

Sometime after the class, a few stems of pineapple flowers would find their way to his desk. They weren't as pretty as some flowers, but if he looked up their meaning...

Hey, Sparkle could live with 'not as pretty.' He blinked at the flowers, crazy-looking things that they were, and then tilted his head and grinned a little.

Okay, those were cool. He was still smiling as he gathered them up to take home with him. They were so going into his room.

Seriously, this class was mostly just making her more and more glad she'd had Slushious during her year-of-no-mom.
