You can go running down the hill after the cheese if you really want to, but be careful not to break a leg or anything. Alternatively, you can pick out a spot on the sidelines before the race gets going, and watch all these idiots fling themselves into the not-so-tender mercies of gravity just for a cheese wheel of their very own.

There are multiple races, so you have plenty of opportunity to win.

Well, he'd be at the top of the hill before the races, and the bottom of the hill at the end of the races, and he was only planning on actually winning the once, because how much cheese did any one person really need, right?

Anyway, throwing himself down the hill multiple times meant that he could be right there if any of the students did it and something went horribly wrong.
