There were so many people, all of them that she'd seen human, and while no one had tossed any slurs at her yet this still didn't do much to make Merrill feel more comfortable; she honestly expected that to happen any second now.

Because so many people. (This might be an ongoing mantra in her head for a while.)

She had a muffin in her hands and was nibbling anxiously at it from as close to the edge of the lawn as she could possibly get.

Clearly Dragon Age messed up on the proper Tolkien relationship between the races. God.

"Are you new here?" he asked instead of answering that question.

It made up for that in sheer volume of giant spiders, at least. Or something.

"Yes. Is it that obvious?"

Painfully, Merrill. Painfully obvious.

Did it, though? Tolkien had an extra-dimensional giant spider that attempted to eat reality itself before freaking out the big bad of the universe enough to flail slapping her away.

Yeah. That's a thing that happened.

"I have yet to see another elf here."

Fine, if you were going to go for quality over quantity, then.

"Here? You mean I'm the only one?" Why was that not at all reassuring? "I haven't seen any other dwarves, either."

Damn right. Arachnopobia taken to the nth degree.

"And I would be the only dwarf here as of yet." Do you better not be snooty at him.

"Well, I'm glad to meet you, then." Yes, she was being nice. No, it wasn't a trick. SURPRISE. "I haven't met very many dwarves before, and not for very long."

DAMN THIS WEIRD DYNAMIC.

"...nice. To meet you too."

He was completely thrown off.

It was a good thing for everyone that Merrill was unlikely to ever get really good at deliberately, adorably disarming.

"Why do you seem surprised by that?" she asked. Polite conversation. So weird.

"Where I come from, our peoples are rarely so friendly."

FOR REASONS.

". . . so you're not from Orzammar, then? I never heard anything about it being different for surface dwarves," Merrill said, still a bit confused.

Well. More than a bit.

"You're from where Anders and Cassandra are from," he replied, feeling so relieved that his worldview was no longer in question. "I am from Erebor. Not of your lands."

Did that make it less weird that an elf wasn't being snotty at you, Thorin? Did it?

"Oh, are dwarves grumpier where you're from, then?" Merrill wondered.

Oddly enough? Yes. Yes, it did.

"We're not grumpy," he replied. Grumpily.

And that was why Merrill wasn't buying it.

"Do dwarves live underground where you're from? I don't think you can grow flowers underground. Maybe if you could, you would be a little less grumpy."

"That sounds suitably elvish."

HE COULD JUST MAKE FLOWERS WITH GEMS AND GOLD.
