There were so many people, all of them that she'd seen human, and while no one had tossed any slurs at her yet this still didn't do much to make Merrill feel more comfortable; she honestly expected that to happen any second now.
Because so many people. (This might be an ongoing mantra in her head for a while.)
She had a muffin in her hands and was nibbling anxiously at it from as close to the edge of the lawn as she could possibly get.

"Well, I'm glad to meet you, then." Yes, she was being nice. No, it wasn't a trick. SURPRISE. "I haven't met very many dwarves before, and not for very long."

"Yes. Is it that obvious?"
Painfully, Merrill. Painfully obvious.
Reply
Yeah. That's a thing that happened.
"I have yet to see another elf here."
Reply
"Here? You mean I'm the only one?" Why was that not at all reassuring? "I haven't seen any other dwarves, either."
Reply
"And I would be the only dwarf here as of yet." Do you better not be snooty at him.

"Why do you seem surprised by that?" she asked. Polite conversation. So weird.

Well. More than a bit.

"Oh, are dwarves grumpier where you're from, then?" Merrill wondered.
Reply
"We're not grumpy," he replied. Grumpily.
