There were tables and chairs set up all around the lawn. Some were in the sun, where folks could work on their tan while they ate, and some were in the shade where folks could stay cool and non-crispy

"I think I can handle a messy room," Elsa decided. "You should see my sister's."
.... Well, it was messy by Elsa's standards.
"Just so long as Canute doesn't eat anything he shouldn't, I don't mind. We'll work on cleaning things away together." She gave Kaylin a warm smile. "How are you doing?"
Re: General Mingling [Fall 2015]notamascotAugust 29 2015, 23:35:37 UTC
"Good," Kaylin said with a grin. "I just returned from Elantra. The sergeant actually told me that he guessed maybe I wasn't a waste of space after all!" Incredibly high praise from the man!
Re: General Mingling [Fall 2015]iceolatedqueenAugust 29 2015, 23:37:43 UTC
Indeed! Of course, if Elsa ever met him, she'd have to give him a stern talking to about ever letting on anything to the contrary in the first place.
"Well, that's good," she hedged. "I mean, that he's starting to see your worth. I've never found you to be a waste of space, you know. And Canute adores you, too."
Re: General Mingling [Fall 2015]notamascotAugust 29 2015, 23:45:44 UTC
"Well, he usually won't train anyone till they're 18 and can officially become a Hawk, so it's especially amazing," Kaylin said cheerfully. "I can't quite keep up with the sword fighting stuff yet, but I'm much better with hand to hand and the daggers, of course."
Does Elsa really need to know this? Or care? Probably not, but hey, Happy!Kaylin was happy!
Her eyes lit up at the mention of Canute. "Oh right! He must be huge! Is he here? He can't be or I'd see him, right?" Still, she looked around just in case.

Of course Elsa cared! She might not necessarily get it, but Kaylin was her friend. That was all that mattered.
"I brought him along, but decided it might be best to leave him in our room," Elsa admitted. "He had a long trip, and headed straight to the foot of my bed to have a nap."
A pause.
"It's going to be interesting finding room for me, come to think of it. He's much larger than he was when I first brought him home."
Re: General Mingling [Fall 2015]notamascotAugust 29 2015, 23:51:58 UTC
Kaylin considered that. "One of you could have my bed," she suggested. "I never really slept in a bed much before I came here. I don't mind sleeping on the floor. All I need is a blanket."
Re: General Mingling [Fall 2015]iceolatedqueenAugust 29 2015, 23:54:44 UTC
"Oh! That's a lovely gesture, Kaylin, but I couldn't possibly. And Canute is incredibly snuggly. I'm mostly being silly. I'll get him a properly-sized dog bed now that there's no chance he'll fit in his old one, and everything will be fine."
Elsa was a princess, but she wasn't so spoiled that she'd leave her roommate sleeping on the floor simply because she had a large dog.

Elsa gave a bittersweet little smile as she nodded.
"She knows now that my being here isn't because of anything that she did. And I'm trying to encourage her to at least go outside and make friends around Arendelle. Just because I rarely leave the castle back home doesn't mean she shouldn't. Actually, she's the one who told me to come back here. She said it was clearly doing me some good."
Which had been good to hear, actually. It made Elsa feel better about wanting to be here in the first place.
Re: General Mingling [Fall 2015]notamascotAugust 30 2015, 00:14:50 UTC
"I think it has," Kaylin said seriously. "You're not nearly as shy and nervous as you were when I first met you. And that's good because you're such a nice person that more people should know you."
"I hope your sister gets out more too, because she's probably nice also."
Re: General Mingling [Fall 2015]iceolatedqueenAugust 30 2015, 03:14:18 UTC
Elsa... maybe blushed the tiniest bit at that, yes.
"Thank you," she managed. "And she is! She's a very lovely, very passionate person. I think the hardest part is going to be finding a middle ground that works for the both of us."
Re: General Mingling [Fall 2015]iceolatedqueenAugust 31 2015, 03:26:43 UTC
"My difficulty is always less about tact, and more about nerve," Elsa admitted. "I can be diplomatic until the end of time if I have to, but people still make me antsy."
Kaylin was actually genuinely happy to see her roommate.
"I've missed you. Are things good at home?" And then a bit sheepishly. "Oh... the room is, well... a bit of a disaster."
Kaylin's stuff was everywhere. Which would be worse, if she actually had much of anything - which she didn't.

A pillow would be nice too, but not essential.
