There were tables and chairs set up all around the lawn. Some were in the sun, where folks could work on their tan while they ate, and some were in the shade where folks could stay cool and non-crispy

"You know where Antiva is?" Anders asked, hand frozen halfway to those cream puffs. "That makes ... at least three of us. There aren't nearly enough people from Thedas here. Did you fall through a portal too?"
He managed a smile. "I'm Anders, by the way. I grew up in Fereldan, so we're practically neighbors."

Isabela laughed. "I lived in Antiva City until recently," she said. Very recently. "Though I'm Rivaini, not Antivan." In case the lack of accent wasn't a clue.
"I'm not entirely sure how I got here, my ship docked in Llomerryn, but when I left here I was." She shrugged. "Ferelden? I've heard some pretty interesting things about Denerim."

"It's nice, but I never get to spend enough time there to get to the good parts," Anders sighed. "My parents live in a little speck of a farming village. But I've heard some interesting things about Llomerryn, too -- is it really all pirates and assassins and wise women?"
Re: General Mingling [Fall 2015]not_every_mageAugust 29 2015, 18:37:41 UTC
"Sounds lovely," Anders said breezily, not wanting to admit he'd never talked to a Qunari. (They weren't exactly thick on the ground in Fereldan farming towns, and of course there were none in the Circle.) He was already feeling provincial next to Isabela; he wasn't quite ready to add to that.
"There isn't much of a Circle there, either, is there? Or at least not compared to Ferelden."
Re: General Mingling [Fall 2015]goodforsixAugust 29 2015, 18:58:31 UTC
And Isabela hadn't even been to any of the really interesting places outside Rivain or Antiva City yet.
They definitely weren't going to have much of a Circle after someone put the Chantry in the mood to see what they were actually doing. "So I've heard," she said. "Turns out mages run away less if you actually let them leave occasionally."
Re: General Mingling [Fall 2015]not_every_mageAugust 29 2015, 19:30:58 UTC
"Imagine that," Anders said dryly. "Mages like being treated like people too. I never would have thought."
He was being less than subtle about his personal bias, here. And given he still had the staff strapped to his back, Isabela might be able to make a few assumptions about where that bias came from.

"Not too different at all, no," Anders nodded. Then, because he wanted to avoid going off on a rant for the moment: "So -- not to completely change the subject -- you might like it here, if you stick around. The people are strange, but kind."

"They do seem on the sweeter side." Isabela's big sib and roommate alike were both tiny and adorable. "Which makes it awkward to ask were a girl can get an actual drink."
Pirate had needs, and Ezra was only going to scratch one of those.

"There's a place in town called Caritas," Anders told her. "Not bad, though the band's a bit creepy. But I usually go off the island and drink in Baltimore -- it's the nearest city. I start to feel too cooped up if I never leave."
There seemed to be a regrettable lack of proper drink though.

New girl without pants.
Anders saw no bad in introducing himself, given those important traits.
"Hi there," he said, shuffling past her to get at the buffet. "Have you tried the little cream puffs yet? They're fantastic."

Given the lack of cute, shirtless boys at Antivan feasts (at least the kind she'd been allowed to attend), this was a plus in her book.

Sort of.

"All that and more," Isabela told him. "There's even Qunari."
She actually managed to say that without bitterness, go her.

"People in general don't like being locked up." Not that she'd know anything about that. Ahem. "Mages aren't any different on that front."
