There were tables and chairs set up all around the lawn. Some were in the sun, where folks could work on their tan while they ate, and some were in the shade where folks could stay cool and non-crispy

"Hey," Kathy said quietly, misreading the situation entirely. She just knew that when she'd sat under the trees and ignored a bunch of people in favor of something else--though, in Kathy's case, that something else was usually a book not a phone--it was because she'd been shy and overwhelmed by all the people, not annoyed at the situation at hand.
"Thirsty?" she asked, offering Xanthippe a bottle of water. "It can get hot out here, even in the shade." She nodded to Xanthippe's flannel if she was still wearing it, of course.

Oh, Kathy.
Yeah, Xanthippe was still annoyed, although her gaze - once it flicked up to Kathy - was mostly wary. For the moment, anyway. "Uh, no thanks. I don't care about the weather, I'm okay."
She'd take the flannel off at some point and everything.

Unfortunately, Xanthippe had not been here for long enough to know that.
So she was going to look at Kathy like she thought the other girl had just suffered some sort of major brain injury. (Kathy deserved it for giving her Kimmy flashbacks.) "What?"
Re: General Mingling [Fall 2015]spin_kick_snapAugust 29 2015, 10:15:17 UTC
"I'm going to guess that's a no then," Kathy said with a sigh. Yeah, that expression she was pretty sure she'd read correctly. "I meant--never mind. It's a Fandom thing. It'll make more sense later."
Well, okay, it probably wouldn't, but she'd be more willing to accept it later and that was the important part.
"I'm Kathy, by the way. Welcome to Fandom,...?" She glanced down, hoping Xanthippe was still wearing her nametag.

She was. But she also filled the same information in verbally. "Xanthippe." And now Kathy knew how to spell what she'd just said! Which was honestly the best way there was for learning her name. "Hi. I don't plan on staying very long."
Re: General Mingling [Fall 2015]spin_kick_snapAugust 29 2015, 12:25:01 UTC
"Like Socrate's wife, Xanthippe?" Kathy asked, blinking. That was not a name she'd ever expected to hear outside of her AP courses, honestly. It made Kathy sound downright boring.
Between Dante and this girl, Kathy's knowledge of the Classics was getting a real workout.
"End up here accidentally? Or get sent here by whomever's in charge back home?" The island was filled with both types, honestly.
Re: General Mingling [Fall 2015]sampippyAugust 29 2015, 13:17:49 UTC
"Well, I didn't choose to come here," Xanthippe informed her with some scorn to her voice. Not directed at Kathy, but you couldn't stop the bitterness from surfacing. "But who ends up in Maryland accidentally?"
Re: General Mingling [Fall 2015]spin_kick_snapAugust 29 2015, 13:26:00 UTC
"Umm, offhand..." Kathy glanced around at the people surrounding the tables. "Anders, Cassandra, and Thorin," she said pointing. "Alluka, too. A bunch of other people, but most of them have graduated."
She shrugged. "I came here on purpose. It's a big adjustment from LA, but you get used to it."
Even fond of it, but she didn't think Xanthippe was ready or interested in hearing about that.
So she ignored the food, and found a tree to sit underneath. With her phone in her hands because of course.

"Would you like something else?" Kathy offered instead. "There's juice and soda and stuff. These picnics always have a ton of variety."

"If there's not a pastry that will magically whisk me away from here," she said, with just the hint of a drawl, "I'm not interested."

"Why?" Kathy asked, confused. "Is that how you got here?"
...It was a less stupid question than it sounded. Really.

"You came here from LA? Why?"
Why would anyone? Obviously Los Angeles was inferior to New York but it was still far better than some random island off the coast of Maryland.

"Because I'm from Koreatown, not Hollywood and Vine," Kathy said wryly. "Fandom has a lot less in the way of gang activity here."
Though a much higher instance of gremlins and other assorted monsters. Still, Kathy would take monsters over the Seventeens any day of the week.

"The weirdest thing so far," Xanthippe said, "is that people keep coming up to me like they can't tell when someone wants to be left alone."
