Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Aug 29, 2015 02:53

Everyone might have been getting ready for the fall semester, but it was definitely still summertime in Fandom. The temperature was high, the wind was low, and it was only going to get hotter once everyone arrived.

There were chairs and tables set out around the lawn, some in shady spots and some out in the sun, and there was a long table of ( Read more... )

This wasn't Sam's first picnic, so he knew he was more responsible than some of the folks here, thank you very much. He was feeling a little nervous about the whole concept of teaching on his own, but raspberry sorbet was fixing that at the moment.

Bob wasn't eating or drinking, for the obvious (to him) reason. Instead, he was wandering around peering at the nametags of people over high-school age that he didn't know.

And a few people that probably weren't over high-school age. Forgive Bob if he wasn't exactly the best judge of ages.

He saw Sam's, glanced up at his face, and snapped his fingers in recognition. "I know you." He'd helped with that whole thing with Gaunt. "The one who likes picking up cursed objects with his bare hands." Sam was getting such a look for that.

Sam had to think for a minute, but then his face lit up when he recognized Bob, only for it to fall a moment later as he looked embarrassed. "Yeah, that was probably dumb. I'm not always the best about thinking rationally before picking up something bad. I'll have to remember that for my class," he said, laughing.

"Well, hopefully you're teachable as well as teaching," Bob teased. "I'm Bob, by the way - I don't remember if we ever introduced ourselves." He waved at the nametag stuck to his lapel, which he was going to save in his office like all the others, because they were things he could touch.

"I'm supposed to be your 'teaching buddy', although at least you've got some experience with this place, thank heavens."

"Yeah, I don't need some of the more basic info. I know about weird weekends and invasions and all," Sam said. "But this is going to be one of my first times teaching by myself. When I've done it before, I did it with my brother. I can't imagine the students have gotten worse recently, right?"

"Not that I'm aware of." Bob shrugged. "What are you teaching?"

"Uh, Hunting 101," Sam said, laughing softly. "I come from a family that hunts supernatural monsters. Demons mostly, shapeshifters, the occasional witch, that sort of thing. And I know those things probably exist where other folks come from too."

"They...do," Bob answered tentatively. An occupation like that could be good or very, very bad. "They aren't always things to be hunted, though."

"Yeah, I know, thanks to this place. I've met enough friendly witches and pink ponies to learn not everything is immediately evil," Sam said. "It was kind of eye-opening at first, that's for sure."

"Well, at least you have learned that," Bob said, visibly relieved. "Otherwise this old sorcerer was going to have a difficult time of it. So you're only teaching hunting when needed?"

"Yeah, for self defense or when others might be in trouble. Or when something invades," Sam said, giving Bob a closer look. "So, uh, sorcerer?" What kind of teaching pair had he gotten himself into?

"More a teacher these days than a practitioner in my own right," Bob admitted. "And I've taught enough to know that there's occasionally need for what you do, although less often than many think. I'm teaching a similar class myself this term, actually - what sorts of creatures are out there and which are likely to be dangerous."
