Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Aug 29, 2015 02:53

Everyone might have been getting ready for the fall semester, but it was definitely still summertime in Fandom. The temperature was high, the wind was low, and it was only going to get hotter once everyone arrived.

There were chairs and tables set out around the lawn, some in shady spots and some out in the sun, and there was a long table of ( Read more... )

Maria wasn't too sure about this who big sibling thing, but she had to admit that it sounded like it could be fun. She filled out a name tag and then looked around for someone named Tali.

It might have been hard not to notice Tali, all things considered, but at least she did have her nametag on. (It wasn't as if Maria knew who she was yet, anyway.)

"There you are!" she exclaimed, sounding enthusiastic and friendly enough to (hopefully) offset how offputting the mask could be. "Unless there's another Maria, that is, but I didn't see one on the roommate list."

She held out one gloved, three-fingered hand. "Welcome to Fandom. I'm Tali, and I'm here to help you get settled in."

Good thing you weren't unfamiliar with the concept of aliens, Maria?

To give Maria credit, she didn't boggle at the person now reaching to shake her hand. The other person seemed nice and wasn't trying to hurt her, so it was a win.

Besides, one of the drivers of the bus had been in a full suit of robot armor or something.

"Hello, Tali, it's nice to meet you," she said with a genuine smile. "Yes, I'm Maria and there wasn't another one of the bus or anything."

Tali had met Wash while waiting for the shuttle a few months ago; was it weird that the armor was familiar enough to make her feel a little more at ease in a strange new situation?

"I didn't think so. I checked the list of new students," Tali said with a hint of wryness in her voice; it was a nerdy kind of thing to do and she knew it. "But it never hurts just to make sure. I hope everything was all right on the trip here? Nothing too shocking?"

Look, you never knew around here.

Maria hadn't known what to think about the teacher wearing armor, but the other one had seemed like a good guy. He also seemed like he cared about the students.

"I met a few of the new kids on the bus and nothing went wrong on the trip. I spent a lot of time looking out the windows since this place is so different from the desert where I grew up."

"Okay, good. It was a smooth trip when I first got here too, but it never hurts to check," Tali said with a nod. "It's an interesting kind of different, isn't it? I've lived on starships my whole life. I'd never spent more than a day or two at a time planetside before I got here."

And usually most of those times, people had been trying to kill her, but that seemed beside the point.

Maria smiled. There was something comfortable about Tali, she just couldn't figure out exactly what.

"It really is. I grew up in the desert and never been on an island before. This is a whole new experience for me." She tilted her head when Tali talked about where she had lived. "Is it rude for me to ask what it was like living in space and on starships?"

She didn't want to be rude, but she wanted to know her big sibling better. This whole boarding school thing wasn't looking to be as depressing right now.

"Not at all," Tali assured her. "But it might not be as exciting as you hope. I know space flight isn't common yet in your -- sorry, I didn't think to ask, are you from around this time? I know not everyone is."

Maria gave her a confused smile. "Well, this place seems to be a few years in the future for me. It's 2015 here and back home, it's not."

She was still convinced that there was some kind of mistake in all of the signs ans documentation she was seeing today.

"Not for me, either. It's 2183 at home, maybe 2184 by now. Hard to guess exactly, with time dilation and . . ."

Whoops. She was nerding out again. No need to overwhelm the poor girl.

"That's another thing about this place. I'm not sure how it does it, but it seems to exist at some kind of . . . Conjunction of different timelines, if that makes sense. We've got people coming from all over, timewise. Sometimes even from different realities. It's kind of fascinating, actually."
