Everyone might have been getting ready for the fall semester, but it was definitely still summertime in Fandom. The temperature was high, the wind was low, and it was only going to get hotter once everyone arrived.

"There you are!" she exclaimed, sounding enthusiastic and friendly enough to (hopefully) offset how offputting the mask could be. "Unless there's another Maria, that is, but I didn't see one on the roommate list."
She held out one gloved, three-fingered hand. "Welcome to Fandom. I'm Tali, and I'm here to help you get settled in."

Besides, one of the drivers of the bus had been in a full suit of robot armor or something.
"Hello, Tali, it's nice to meet you," she said with a genuine smile. "Yes, I'm Maria and there wasn't another one of the bus or anything."

"I didn't think so. I checked the list of new students," Tali said with a hint of wryness in her voice; it was a nerdy kind of thing to do and she knew it. "But it never hurts just to make sure. I hope everything was all right on the trip here? Nothing too shocking?"

"I met a few of the new kids on the bus and nothing went wrong on the trip. I spent a lot of time looking out the windows since this place is so different from the desert where I grew up."

"It really is. I grew up in the desert and never been on an island before. This is a whole new experience for me." She tilted her head when Tali talked about where she had lived. "Is it rude for me to ask what it was like living in space and on starships?"
She didn't want to be rude, but she wanted to know her big sibling better. This whole boarding school thing wasn't looking to be as depressing right now.

Whoops. She was nerding out again. No need to overwhelm the poor girl.
"That's another thing about this place. I'm not sure how it does it, but it seems to exist at some kind of . . . Conjunction of different timelines, if that makes sense. We've got people coming from all over, timewise. Sometimes even from different realities. It's kind of fascinating, actually."
