Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Jan 03, 2015 02:38

The forecast for today might have called for rain, but thankfully, there was no sign of bad precipitation in Fandom. The weather was bright and sunny, but still a bit chilly, so the first thing people might have noticed when they arrived was the bonfire set up in the middle of the lawn. There were tables and chairs scattered around the bonfire, ( Read more... )

Obi-Wan's little round of the teachers took him near Jono soon enough. He wasn't eager to become too attached to this community, and so he knew to be careful not to engage too much, or too many.

There was something about Jono that piqued his curiosity, however. Perhaps it was the bandages.

"Your pet is keeping awfully calm in this crowd," he said.

... it was the cat. It was definitely the cat.

//Hm?// Jono glanced up at Obi-Wan, tilted his head curiously, and then just nodded. Okay, another one of the Jedi types, from the look of him. It wouldn't be a new semester on the island without at least one or two of those. //Oh, she's used to it by now. She's got that pocket staked out for her own personal use, has for ages now.//

It helped that she had remained surprisingly small since he'd gotten her, either because of some genetic quirk fitting for the pet of a mutant, or because of some whimsy of the island. Jono wasn't complaining.

//I've been through thick and thin with her. She's sat out a war or two, but picnics are nothing at all.//

The telepathic speech was... interesting, but nothing so out of the ordinary that Obi-Wan felt inclined to make a fuss about it. "I can see that," he said. "She seems awfully pleased. May I touch her?"

He said it as much to Joni as he did to Jono. Perhaps even more to Joni than anyone else.

//She likes people,// Jono offered, gently coaxing her from his pocket. //You can hold her, if you like. Support her bottom, like this...//

She was already purring. Apparently Joni approved of the new man with the furry face, too. A good sign, if you asked Jono. She was generally a good judge of these things.

Obi-Wan smiled. He reached for the cat and supported her bottom as instructed, scritching her behind the ear with his free hand. She seemed pleased with the set-up. "I am happy to meet you, as well," he told the cat.

//Joni,// Jono supplied, fondly. //She answers to Joni. Seemed to fit better than the name she had when she was handed to me. She hasn't complained, anyway.//

Such a tiny thing was managing one hell of a mighty purr. Even Jono was pretty impressed.

//Fan of cats, are you?//

"Thank you, Joni," Obi-Wan said, and then he looked up to meet Jono's eyes. "I haven't met her like before, but even from afar she seemed like a sensible creature."

He glanced towards the crowd of teenagers just up ahead. "More so than others at this picnic."

//You're here to teach, I'm guessing?// Jono glanced out toward the crowd as well, and gave his head a shake. //I want to say you get used to that, but teenagers are always teenagers, no matter how many new ones come in. This is the first semester I've had more than one almost use a weapon on me before they even made it to the island, though. So, that'll make for an interesting year, I'm certain.//

He didn't seem entirely bothered by having a sword waved at him, at least. Par for the course, for Fandom.

"I'm here to teach, or so I'm told," Obi-Wan said. "No one chose to get my opinion on the matter. But I am not unused to teenagers."

He doubted any of these could be as much of a nightmare as Anakin had been, at certain stages of his life.

"You've worked here a long time, I presume."

//A few years, anyway, off and on,// Jono confirmed. //Was a student here before then, and... well, Fandom's a bit like home, now. Didn't really see that coming, but I won't complain.//

Obi-Wan's arm was now getting happily kneaded at by a purring kitten who was also licking his thumb. Because thumbs were delicious, clearly.

//Opinion really doesn't have much to do with it, so far as Fandom is concerned. You're either here or you're not here, and it might take you a while to put a finger on why you stay, but those who do don't often regret it.//

Obi-Wan entertained the kitten absently, keeping his fingers moving behind her ears and along her back.

"It seems interesting enough," he said mildly. "Though that isn't necessarily a good thing."

//And there's always a catch, isn't there?// Jono looked out over the teenagers, picking out a few new faces in the crowd. //If you're here for anything resembling a safe teaching experience, for example, you're on the wrong island.//

"Oh, trust me," Obi-Wan said, "I have never had much luck with safe teaching experiences."

He glanced towards Jono again. "What does 'unsafe' entail here?"

Jono shrugged his shoulders easily.

//It changes up to keep us on our toes,// he explained. //Not long ago, it was ghosts, trying to take over the locals. Occasionally people get grabbed right up and dumped into other realities, alternate timelines, darker echoes of things that shouldn't have ever been. The whole of the multiverse started vanishing, once... Just started disappearing entirely. Fandom doesn't do danger by half-measures, I'm afraid. Though I'd be willing to wager you have a bit of experience with danger, yourself. You're Jedi, right?//

Obi-Wan considered denying it. After all, he was still attempting to fly under the radar - though he was starting to get the distinct impression this island was as under the radar as it got.

But no. He had apparently already been found out.

"The robes are a bit of a giveaway, I suppose."

//They aren't exactly subtle,// Jono agreed, shrugging his shoulders. //We've had our fair share of people sporting ones like them, over the years. Hell, probably everybody who ever sported the name 'Skywalker' for a few generations running, and others, besides. If you were hoping to blend in, you probably should've done some shopping before the picnic, mate.//
