Sex, Dating and Self-Confidence [Tuesday, Period 2]

Sep 29, 2014 20:38

Today, Irene was perched on the edge of her desk as usual, the question box posed on her lap. "Good morning," she greeted everyone with a smile as they filed in. "I hope your weekends were as pleasant as they could be -- or, at least, if they weren't, that you have subsequently recovered. We have a few questions in the box this week, so let's get ( Read more... )

Why is porn so unrealistic? Is it really necessary to have a stupid framework on which to hang your sex story? Does porn breed expectations in the people who watch it? And so on. Thoughts on porn!

"I'm pretty sure that porn started out so cheesy and unrealistic because that's just the best they could do with the acting talent and studio equipment they had back in the day. But after a while, it's like B-movies. That's just the way you do them," Johnny said. "I think the internet has opened things up, though. Now the only bad acting you have to deal with is during the sex, because why would anyone put up with the stuff that isn't sex? There's BILLIONS of other videos to watch without the filler."

If anyone was surprised that Johnny had strong opinions on the quality of porn, they were lying. Either to the class or themselves.

"But what if you like the filler?" Raven may have done some exploring online on this topic already, yes. "Some people like to have a little story with their sex."

"Then the internet is a giant place with plenty of different kinds of porn for all tastes," Johnny said. "I have some websites I can send you for that."

He was being helpful.

"I can find my own porn," Raven said.

Mostly because people back home would absolutely die if they ever heard her say it.

"If you change your mind, let me know," Johnny said.

"Some people totally watch porn for the plot," Irene said, because she totally knew people who did. "Or at least claim to. Some people need to be swept up in the fantasy. In a lot of ways, pornography is sort of like those romance novels that feature bare-chested men and have long-winded sexual descriptions -- some people need to escape into another world to fully enjoy themselves."

"I don't personally get that, but I guess I can respect it," Johnny said. "Whatever works, right?"

"It might also save money," Eleanor said, shrugging. "If you had to hire accomplished actors, you might have to pay them more."

"Oh, that's for sure. Like, a real actor isn't going to take money to have graphic sex on camera unless they're getting paid really well and or there's a shot at an award," Johnny said. "Or they just want to change the kind of roles they get. One of those three."

"The plot and non-sex parts used to need to be there for legal reasons," Joker pointed out. "If you watch the old stuff, there's a official-looking disclaimer that certifies it 'does not appeal to the prurient interest'." He snorted. "If people want to censor obscenity, they should start with that notice. And the quality? It's put together by the people who couldn't get work in real movies. Of course it's not going to be good. Well, most of it. There's plenty of good stuff out there, too, if you dig."

Well, this class was going great. "Okay, yeah," Joker replied. "I've seen a lot of it. A whole lot. If that's... I mean, if you'd rather I didn't, we can talk..."

"Why would I want to keep you from your favorite hobby?" Eleanor asked.

Still about as chilly as Elsa, over here.

"Because it's upsetting you. I don't like upsetting you. Sooo... we should talk."

"... later," Eleanor said, suddenly feeling sheepish if he was actually serious about that. Like, giving up an entire hobby because she was cranky about it, that was ... something. "We ... we can talk later."
