Jul 06, 2013 11:38

The weather was just as hazy, hot and humid as a typical July on the East Coast of the United States could get, but the sun was shining brightly, which was kind of a rarity this summer ( Read more... )

When Anna got around to checking the list to see if she'd been assigned a new roommate since Stacey moved out, she might be heard muttering to herself, "Well, Mavis is probably a girl's name."

Hopefully for Anna's patience, she didn't get around to that check until dusk had fallen over the island, because that was when girls named Mavis got around to... being around. Or at least around to being awake, outdoors, and twenty feet away from any looming, tuxedo-clad figures in scarlet capes. ...Maybe fifteen feet? Mavis refused to look behind her to see how badly her father was pretending not to spy on her as she made her way past the table of strange-looking food toward the area where she'd picked up the sound of her name. Vampire hearing for the win.

"Definitely a girl's name!" she said to the girl in the white dress whose paleness rivaled her own. "And I'm that girl. Or one of them? It'd be weird if there were two Mavises here." Wait, what if there were? What if this was another Mavis and she'd just insulted her? "But not bad weird, totally cool weird, really! I love my name, and if you're Mavis too, don't worry, I'm really good at sharing. ...Also, babbling like a complete idiot. Hi."

"Oh, hi!" Anna said. "Yes, I mean, no, I'm not Mavis, I'm Anna. I think I'm your new roommate." She gestured in the direction of the list. "Welcome to Fandom High!"

"Holy rabies, really?" Mavis, don't try to hug the complete stranger. There's excited and then there's too excited. "Oh wow, I've never had a roommate before. Do you know what number we're in? My dad won't stop freaking out about me staying in a different building from him, but maybe he'd calm down if he can give some orders, like where to deliver my coffin."

Anna was so startled at someone suddenly trying to hug her that she might have gone a little incorporeal there for a moment. Sorry about the hugging air, Mavis. "Um," she said, trying to pretend like that was a totally normal thing to have happen, "We're in room 205. I was already there, so I hope you don't mind the other side of the room. But I don't have much stuff, so there's plenty of room in the closets and whatever...uh. Did you say coffin?"

Was someone playing a joke on her? Was it Kenzi?

Mavis, for her part, blinked a little when solid suddenly became not, but her confusion cleared quickly enough. "Oh, are you a poltergeist?" Most ghosts around the castle didn't do bodies so much as mist or sheets or animating suits of armor, but some of the guests -- the ones who tended to pay extra for trashed hotel rooms -- were another story. "I thought you were a vampire like me, sorry!"

"Oh, a vampire!" Anna exclaimed, clearly relieved. That explained so much. "And, no, I'm not a poltergeist--I mean, I'm a ghost, just...kind of a weird ghost, I guess." It was kind of a long and depressing story for first acquaintance.

"We've got a lot of ghosts at home," Mavis answered, blowing off the weird because ahahaha no. "But I've never met any my age before. This is so great!" Remaining ridiculously enthusiastic while feeling like a dork about being ridiculously enthusiastic was a skill Mavis hadn't known she possessed until now. The dork part did manage to slip in a followup of, "I've never really met anybody my age before. I guess that's kind of obvious."

"I wouldn't say so," Anna assured her. "This place is a lot for everybody at first...but really? Nobody?" That sounded depressing.

"We live in a hotel," Mavis explained. "So I meet lots of people, but they're all either little kids or my Dad's age or ancient. Teenagers mostly don't want to come hang out in the Carpathians with their parents and play bingo on vacation."

"But what about school?" Anna asked. "Do vampires have school?"

((Ugh, sorry, the notif just now showed up.))

"Dracula High valedictorian, swim team captain and president of one student body, a hundred and three years running," Mavis pointed to herself and rolled her eyes. "Don't get me wrong, I love my Dad and he's a great teacher, but there's a limit to how long you can stay trapped in the same place without going crazy, you know?"

[No worries!]

"Yes," Anna agreed, maybe a little more solemnly than Mavis might have been expecting. "I know exactly what you mean."

"But we're here now. At least I think we are; I'm still not sure this place isn't just a really amazing dream!" Mavis grinned. "Did you just get here earlier than me, or were you already a student?" The grin lost a little wattage as a thought occurred and she added, "Wait, you're not trapped here, are you?"

Amazing place or not, never being able to leave would make things a whole lot less dreamy.
