The weather was just as hazy, hot and humid as a typical July on the East Coast of the United States could get, but the sun was shining brightly, which was kind of a rarity this summer

It wasn't Sia's first time doing this, so she was relatively sure she get through this without scarring her new little sibling. While she hated the nametag, she wrote "Marasiah" on it, with "(Sia)" under it since she'd learned by now, and kept an eye out for Mavis.

She'd probably have to peer a little harder by the time dusk fell and Mavis finally made it out of her father's hotel room and down to the picnic, but at least one of them had exceptionally good night-vision, so there was that.
She also had a Hi My Name Is MAVIS DRACULA tag, because might as well get the Yeah, yeah, that Dracula, don't worry, his growl is worse than his bite thing over with right at the beginning, and nametags in general, eh. With the number of conventions she'd helped her dad host, she'd long ago gotten over feeling dorky about them, even if he wouldn't be caught undead wearing one.
"Mar-ah-see-ah?" she pronounced carefully but correctly, before getting to the helpful parenthetical. "Wow, I love your hair! My aunt has a streak just like that." Except for the part where she could literally hide a beehive inside her beehive. "Are you a Stein too?"

"They're my dad's best friends," Mavis explained, "But we're not actually related to them, so..." She shrugged. "No streak for me. Among other things Auntie Eunice has that I didn't get." She glanced a little ruefully down at her chest.

Mavis was young, for a vampire! The fact that Sia was 99 years younger would be totally beside the point if Mavis a) knew that, or more importantly b) realized she was human.
"Just got up," Mavis said, inclining her head toward the fading light on the horizon. "My dad and I got in this morning, but we slept most of the day." Well, he had. She'd been bouncing around the hotel room since five or so, peeking out through the curtains and waiting for the sun to go down.

"That sounds nice and nocturnal," Sia said, with no idea who she was talking to because of course they didn't have Dracula where she came from. "It was a long journey, I take it?"
Re: Meet Your Big/Little Sibling [Summer 2013 - II]callmemavyJuly 7 2013, 16:10:26 UTC
Mavis nodded. "We flew over from Transylvania." Lest she give the wrong impression, she clarified, "Cargo, not, you know." She flapped her arms bat-style, but didn't actually transform. "Too much luggage for that."

After a year, Sia didn't even think that was weird. It was possible Sia had been here too long. Plus, it made the 'so this place is a little off' spiel easier. "So you fly? I think there are a few others who do, too."

Oh, what the heck. Mavis purple-poofed into her bat form -- complete with slightly smaller Hi My Name Is MAVIS DRACULA nametag -- and flapped in place a few times before person-poofing again. "Wow, really? Cool! I almost never get to fly with anybody but Dad."
Re: Meet Your Big/Little Sibling [Summer 2013 - II]callmemavyJuly 8 2013, 01:30:55 UTC
"That'd be awkward," Mavis decided. "We had a werecamel lady at the hotel once who changed every time she sneezed. She smashed like... five dining room chairs that way."

"I only met the one," Mavis admitted. "She might've been a regular camel who just got cursed to look human except when she sneezed? I didn't think it was polite to ask at the time."

Sia smiled a little, and assured her, "You're young." Because at sixteen, she could say that. "Did you just get in?"
