The weather was just as hazy, hot and humid as a typical July on the East Coast of the United States could get, but the sun was shining brightly, which was kind of a rarity this summer

Emma had been prepared to get the hell out of there as soon as the shuttle emptied, but there was a picnic and they hadn't seemed to have realised she wasn't supposed to be here yet, so now she was standing over here, complete with a nametag.

What a crazy coincidence! Evan just so happened to have a nametag, too, and he'd been informed of a little sibling that he was supposed to meet today, so he had been keeping an eye open for an Emma ever since the shuttle had arrived. He was smiling warmly as he walked up to her, pleased that hse hadn't been all that difficult to find.
"Hi! Emma, right?" He gave her a little wave hello. "Welcome to the island! I'm Evan, you might have seen my name next to yours on the sibling list already?"
Maybe! Maybe not! These new student days were always full of surprises.

He was the tiniest goth you were ever going to meet, Emma. And he was going to tiny goth at you until you were feeling comfortable around here, if you'd let him.
"Oh." He blinked, and then gave her a sheepish little smile and a shrug of his shoulders. "Well... the school assigns the new students to people who have been around for a while, so that we can show you guys around and help you settle in more easily," he explained. "This place can be pretty overwhelming, so it's actually a surprisingly useful setup, you know?"

Oh, expensive schools with your mysterious ways. "Right, I can see how that would be a thing." Not sure how it was relevant to her though, since she wasn't going to stick around that long.
Re: Meet Your Big/Little Sibling [Summer 2013 - II]genesisheroJuly 6 2013, 12:26:20 UTC
"Right," Evan echoed, smiling because clearly this meant he was making some headway with his new little sibling, didn't it? "So... what brings you to the island? The school offers a pretty good education for pretty much anyone from anywhere, you just kind of have to know how to take some of it in stride."

Even if tipping her hand wouldn't be a monumentally stupid idea, Emma suspected telling him 'I got on the bus to avoid airport security' would be kind of like kicking a puppy.
"There was a brochure," she said instead. "It was glittery."
Re: Meet Your Big/Little Sibling [Summer 2013 - II]genesisheroJuly 6 2013, 12:42:03 UTC
Evan had been kicked by far meaner than Emma, and he'd been on the island long enough to know what it was like. The honest answer probably would have had him nodding his head sympathetically, more likely.
... Like a very sympathetic puppy.
"Yeah, they... kind of really like glitter around here," Evan replied, spreading his hands a little in a 'what can you do?' gesture. "Which isn't so bad, really, except that it can go a little overboard at school dances. Everything in the brochure is true, at least. It's just maybe a little understated."

"It is," Evan agreed, perking up a bit. "Everyone here is really open-minded, and the classes have plenty of variety. The pool in the dorms is pretty good, and the beach is even better, and... okay, the sports teams aren't too bad, considering we don't actually have anyone to play against. But the library is awesome."

Oh, there was a pool, Kathy from the bus would probably like knowing that. "That all sounds nice." Pity she wasn't really enrolled here. Not that she'd fit in even if she was.
Re: Meet Your Big/Little Sibling [Summer 2013 - II]genesisheroJuly 6 2013, 13:06:15 UTC
"It's better than some schools, anyhow," Evan replied, wrinkling his nose a little. "We get a lot of students here who are running from worse things back home, you know? From people who just don't understand them, so they're afraid... things like that."
Tiny little voice of experience, right here.
"It's great to be going to school on an island where everyone fits in, even if it's only by virtue of nobody fitting in."
Re: Meet Your Big/Little Sibling [Summer 2013 - II]genesisheroJuly 6 2013, 13:37:16 UTC
Evan nodded a little, and then gave his toe an awkward little scuff against the ground.
"So... is there anything that I can help you with, now that you're here? I can tell you how to get to any of the stores in town, or help you find your room, or... pretty much anything like that."

"That's what's on the name tag, but, no, didn't really notice."
