When the others started arriving Stark stopped his pacing. He dropped into a crouch quickly, back against the wall, and made himself as small as he could again. He didn't think it would work today but he'd been wrong before. He'd been wrong about so many things.

Tahiri made a guttural, distinctly derisive noise deep in her throat as she approached.

"Does that help?" she inquired casually. "Have you ever managed to really hide that way?"

"Not hiding," Stark corrected. He didn't look up. Not yet. "There's nowhere to hide here. Just...taking up less space." He managed, somehow, to pull himself into more of a ball. "Sometimes it helps. Sometimes. Not today." Obviously.

"That could be helpful," Tahiri replied with a patronizing sort of sigh. "We never know when we'll need more room in here. Sadly, I don't think today is that day."

She smiled, and nothing about it was reassuring. "May as well get comfortable while you can."

"No comfort here, either," Stark said, mostly to himself. "We don't need more room. Not how we'd have to get it. How would I get comfortable? Did you bring something comforting?"

He looked up at Tahiri. "What do you want?"

He could keep himself together. He could. He knew he could. If his hand was fiddling nervously with the buckle at his neck that didn't mean anything.

Tahiri shrugged. "Who said I needed anything? Maybe I was just bored."

"This helps with boredom?" Stark asked, looking around the room. He should stop talking. He knew he should. He'd never been good at that.

"I'm not that interesting. Really. I'm just...me. Not interesting. Not exciting. Just a Banik." Who had strange things in his head and used to be a science experiment.

. . . much like Tahiri, actually. That might have something to do with it.

"The only one of your kind here," she pointed out, and kept to herself that they had that in common. "Shame you had to take sides with these brenzlit."

"I...have an aversion," Stark said softly, "to dictators. Those who take away freedom. Freedom is important." Which is why he's locked up. Shh, it totally makes sense. Really.

"They're right. You aren't."

"Then what use is it to be in here, cowering?" Tahiri demanded. "If you believe that as strongly as you claim you do, where's the force of your conviction?"

Look, she'd pretty much given in to the zealot tendencies and rampant militarism of her Yuuzhan Vong brain. It made sense to her.

"Better than the alternative," Stark answered. "Where am I supposed to go? What should I do? Walk out? Die?"

"I've done this before. Been locked away. Most of my life was this. Cages and cells. Better this than helping you."
