May 07, 2011 05:53

The weather was nice, the school wasn't currently under attack from forces not of this universe and they were still in Iceland. Oh yeah, it was day one of the rest of the newbies' lives.

Welcome to fandom, kiddos. Try not to trip over left over sombreros from Thursday!

Not only did Caroline have what she believed to be the biggest smile of anyone looking for a sibling, but she also had a huge poster welcoming Kate to the island. There had been several rough drafts, but in the end Caroline had stuck to her guns and gone all out with the glitter and Viking-appropriate color palette.

She decided it shouldn't be too difficult to draw the attention of the newest member of her Fandom family!

Okay, that was not so tough to miss. Maybe the name tag hadn't been necessary, clearly Kate had picked up the move over-eager person in the place.

She clenched her teeth fighting a wave of nausea that she couldn't quite place, and took a couple of steps closer. "I'm going to go out on a limb, and say you're looking for me."

"Only if you're Kate!" Caroline was really way too excited for this. "Which, okay, your name tag confirms, but I have it on good authority some people lie on those things - like anyone should want to go around pretending they're Captain Planet or something when there's clearly a system at work here. Anyway! I'm Caroline and it's so good to meet you!"

Maybe she should've said no to the coffee this morning.

Oh, she really was way, way too excited.

"Whatever you're on, I think I need some of that." Because her lack of sleep last night, and the twitchy edge that had crept on in the last few moments... it felt like she needed it.

Caroline considered saying she had some fresh blood bags up in her room she'd be willing to share, but she was trying to be a normal teenager here.

"Just the high of the picnic. Oh, and coffee. I don't know what I was thinking there, it just makes me feel like I'm talking way faster than I should be." Or was that the sugar she put in the coffee? "Anyway, how was the ride in? Did our new Viking overlords greet you guys?"

"... Not yet," she answered, stoically repressing the urge to turn and run. Sorry Caroline, nothing against you personally. Just your race. The more she concentrated on it, the more she became aware of who it was coming from.

"Why do you have Vikings?" It just begged to be asked, while she tried to figure out what in the hell she was dealing with.

"Um, I'm honestly not sure? It seems like someone stole the island at graduation and...no one's fixed it yet." Which okay, was kind of odd when she thought of it that way. "The portals still work, so it's just a bigger pain in the ass to get to the mall than it was before."

Well. "Good to know." Island that got kidnapped. Great. What had Greg got her in to?

"That happen often?"

Weird how she was actually asking questions Caroline wasn't sure she could bullshit answers to. "Not that I know of. I mean, considering the rain came from the ground a few weeks back, I wouldn't put it past the owners to sell it, but stealing makes no sense to me."

Kate frowned, and this time, wasn't because her stomach was still turning. "Are you due to flare or something?" Rain from the ground sounded like the sort of thing only a flare could bring on. Freaky shit.

Flares were a bitch, so she really freaking hoped she hadn't walked in on one of those.

"Flare...what?" This was a term Caroline didn't know. "Like a solar flare? Um, if you're looking for science geek help, I do know the kid for you to talk to."

"Nooooo," she said carefully. "Post-shift, magic flare... None of this means anything to you?" Slowly slowly, starting to realize she was not in Kansas any more.

Or Georgia, rather.

"No...though I have a friend who can do magic? Does that count?" They weren't from Georgia, though she was pretty sure that's where Damon and Elena found some witch. Hmm.

"Not really." Sorry Caroline.

Kate paused there, trying to mentally reach out and see what she could feel here. Everything radiating off the girl screamed 'undead', but she sure as fuck didn't look like the dried out almost skeletal corpses that passed for vampires back home. The empty space there should have been in her mind -- that wasn't there either.

But a living necromancer didn't have even half this soaking of death reeling off them.

"... Are you dead?" Right to the point then. There was probably a more tactful way of going there, but Kate honestly sucked at that.

"Dead?" Caroline raised an eyebrow at her new little sib in wonder of how she knew to ask that question. Seriously? Did she smell that badly. And yes, that was Caroline sniffing at her arm before looking back at Kate. "Well, I guess that really depends on your definition of dead? And really if you know about magic you probably won't be too shocked to hear I'm a vampire - totally the good king though? Like, I don't bite people. It's a thing."

"We don't have good vampires." And that rolling nausea in her stomach was making a lot more sense now. "Or, ones that look like you."

Which would be why Kate would be keeping her current distance and making sure her needles could be easily retrieved.
