American History, Period 2 03/12

"World War I started for Europe in June, 1914," Tyler said, once the class seemed to be assembled and relatively quiet. They were meeting in the danger shop today, with a row of chairs at long tables arranged in front of flight simulators. "Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary was assassinated by a Serbian anarchist." There was the trace of ( Read more... )

Take notes, pick feathers out of the hair of your neighbors, sleep, whatever.

Blah blah World War I, yadda yadda yadda . . . Katchoo put her head down on her arms and half-dozed through everything until it got to the bit about them flying planes.

Because ooo.

The rest of it was completely irrelevant. Blah blah assassination, blah blah casualties... flying!

The engines were notoriously problematic, the manoeuvrability was not so great, and your machine guns are all offset to the left because your fuselage is so narrow.

But you get to fly. And shoot one another down, if you feel like it. So who cares?

Katchoo flew a plane like she drove: however the hell she wanted to, and god help you if you were in her way.

And she had guns on this thing. Accurate or not, she could shoot things. And she just might be imagining everyone else as harpies.

Sucky engines, terrible maneuverability, and guns that might as well be clubs.

It was like flying one of the first generation KLF fleet! If Anemone were the sentimental-type, she'd be cooing.

Instead she was busy coaxing the plane to do things that it was usually not capable of doing, pushing the aircraft's capabilities past the limit as she unrepentantly went about shooting at her classmates.

Sam didn't have much in the way of flying experience at all, but that didn't stop him from getting right into it and feeling glad that Dean hadn't decided to take this class.

She was drowsy still, and wearing long sleeves because healing the bruises she'd managed to pick up while out on mission was way too much effort right now to bother with until, like, tomorrow at the earliest.

Nonetheless, she was in a far better mood than yesterday. Twelve hours of sleep tended to have that affect.

"You came back," Tyler informed her. "Good mission?"

"I did?" she said, putting on a mildly surprised look. "I thought I was still at home!"

Only, you know, not.

"It was okay, I guess? Asuma-sensei had time to train us on the side, so it wasn't a huge rush."

Who really just pick these in-class assignments to amuse themselves at your expense.

They do. Though Tyler looked like he was waiting for a turn in one of the sims.

Algren, on the other hand, looked like he was more than content to stand back and watch the students do all the flying.

Really.

Okay. Maybe he was looking at the planes curiously now and then. But only now and then.

Honest.
