When students entered the classroom today, they would find not one, but two men standing at the front. One of them was probably familiar to some of them, the other one was a new face... Although his wardrobe probably needed a little updating.

You! Name, class, which historical figure you would challenge, and why!

"Actions such as those against innocent people are often the most difficult to forget," Algren replied, giving a curt nod as his pacing wore down and he leaned backward against his desk. "I can appreciate your answer, Miss Stackhouse. There are... few excuses, even in war, for victimizing those who posed no threat to begin with."

He took a deep breath and closed his eyes for a moment. Northern Aggression. Hm. His class on the Civil War was going to be an interesting one, at least.

"Thank you."

"My name is Alice Liddell," she said, standing and folding her hands behind her back. "I'm a junior this year. I would say that I'd confront the Red Queen, except I already did confront her, so perhaps that shouldn't count. Queen Victoria, then. I would like to have some strong words with her about her notions of propriety."

Alice had been wearing trousers and plain shirts for months, and had yet to descend into unutterable ruin. She should have noticed that sort of thing.

"Propriety by her standards does seem to be a bit overrated in this day and age, doesn't it?" Algren hadn't been on the island for long, but he found it difficult not to notice the quantities of women casually walking around in pants. "At least you can console yourself by knowing that standards have changed somewhat over the years, Miss Liddell?"

"I can," she nodded. "I wore starched pinafores and the like, when first I arrived. Trousers are far more comfortable. No wonder gentleman are so fond of them."

Although her little brother seemed to enjoy wearing kilts. Ah, society.

"Perhaps I ought to look into modernizing my own clothing," Algren mused, taking a moment to glance down at what he was wearing. And then he smiled. "One thing at a time, perhaps. I'm relieved to see that it's mostly just the cut of the clothes which has changed for me."

"To some extent, the complexity," she added. "It isn't necessary for gentlemen to wear suits and ties at all times, only for the most formal of occasions. This is presuming that you are from a time near my own, which it seems as though you may be."

Men's fashions were harder to pinpoint than women's, but his style and manner of dress seemed familiar, even as his accent betrayed that he was not a fellow Brit.

Well, that certainly piqued his curiosity.

"I'm from July of 1876. Victoria was still queen of Britain, so I imagine it would be safe to assume that you are from a time similar to my own?"

"When I left, it was May of 1873," she explained with a light smile. "Though I was across the pond in Oxford and then Rutledge. I suppose that nearly makes us neighbors, chronologically if not geographically."

But then, she always was terrible with geography.

She frowned, suddenly. "I will hope you do not think ill of me, that I no longer follow proper etiquette."

Truthfully, she had always been far too impertinent for etiquette, but sitting in class in a tee-shirt and denim trousers, while speaking with someone from her own time, felt oddly like she had been caught sneaking out a window by her parents.

"When in Rome," Algren stated, still smiling, "do as the Romans do. I should think the one not following proper etiquette in this day and age would be me, Miss Liddell. I am standing in front of a 2009 classroom wearing clothing that dates back to America's centennial year."

All of a week ago, for him.

"That said, it is good to meet somebody who at least comes from the same decade as I do."

"I didn't switch to modern clothes for nearly two months," she smiled. "And in my case, it was less a case of fashion than comfort. Pinafores and petticoats are rather more difficult to move about in than should be allowed."

That actually earned a chuckle from Algren.

"I wouldn't know," he confessed. "And I really hope it remains that way, as well."

"Gavin Darklighter and I'm a senior," he started while trying to think of someone to use as an answer to the second question. "Ysanne Isard. I mean, she's currently in power back where I'm from but I would assume she's historical and she's caused a lot of kriffing problems and I would love to just...yeah."

He took a breath.

"But, if you mean from here, um, probably...Napoleon I. Only because no one man should have that much power. It all goes to your head one day."

"Hi, Gavin," Tyler said. "So, do the problems Isard is causing sort of match your problems with Napoleon? Is it all about too much power?"

"Pretty much, yeah," Gavin said and shrugged. "I haven't really known anyone that can handle all that power without it going to their head in some way. It's just too much for one person. Either they go to war trying to keep the power or they go to war trying to get more."

Tyler nodded rapidly. "There's a saying, 'absolute power corrupts absolutely.' Even if someone starts off with good intentions, just being kowtowed to makes most people drunk on power. No one can handle it."

God knew he couldn't.

"It happens less in the U.S. because of elections, but there will still be some presidents we look at who went more than a little crazy."
