SOMALIA FAMINE CRISIS

The Eastern-African country of Somalia is currently suffering through its worst drought in 60 years. This drought, coupled with a militant faction controlling regions of the country and denying aid organizations access to citizens, means that over 3.7 million people are in immediate crisis. For a country of only 7.5 million, this number is staggering. Sixty-four thousand children are among those suffering the most from the famine.

On Thursday, August the 4th, the United Nations upgraded the Somalia Famine Crisis to include three additional zones, one of which is the growing refugee camps established in the country's capital of Mogadishu. These conditions are predicted to persist until at least December, while the need for aid is rapidly growing as more Somali’s are impacted.

Due to the political climate in the country, many aid organizations are limited to helping only those who escape to refugee camps in Mogadishu or the neighbouring countries of Kenya and Ethiopia. Neither of these countries is able to support this population influx without outside assistance. Although only 5% of Somalia’s population is safely in these camps, this number continues to significantly grow each day as Somali’s flee both the drought and political instability that is preventing them from receiving the full benefits aid organizations are attempting to offer.

In addition to all of this, recent heavy rains have hampered relocation efforts of Somali’s and flooded established camp grounds; the risk of a serious disease outbreak continues to grow.

Following successful fundraising efforts for the Queensland floods crisis and the Japanese tsunami disaser, fandomaid is launching a new campaign in support of this humanitarian crisis.

The closing date for the current fundraising effort is:
9am Australian Eastern Standard Time (ie. Sydney) on Wednesday the 24th of August
3pm American Eastern Standard Time (ie. New York) on Tuesday the 23rd of August
11pm Coordinated Universal Time (ie. Greenwich Mean Time) on Tuesday the 23rd of August

(For more time zones: The World Clock)

Please continue to check the main page of fandomaid for updates on the current political situation in Somalia and any changes to aid distribution inside the country and throughout neighbouring refugee camp sites.
