Is there a reason squeaky19 isn't on the poll? I'd say given his welcome to the fandom influx on IJ, he's pretty fandom friendly.

I think the list is down to all 'pro fandom & in fandom' candidates - it's a boolean AND, not an OR. That's what I understood anyway. :)

Yes, he's absolutely fandom friendly, but for our purposes here we're going for a person who is a member of fandom. That's basically the baseline criteria for this community.

I think this could be a good idea, but the problem is that not all of these candidates have actually said that their goal is to defend fandom interests. There's a difference between being in fandom and promising to actively work for fandom.

*nods* Absolutely, and I'm believing that the voting process will weed those candidates out. If I did that on my own though, I don't think that's as above board as we all would like, you know? It's my hope that members of fandom will take a look at the platforms of these people and see who is going to best promote/defend fannish interests. I don't think it'd be fair for me to go in and arbitrarily say that oh, this person doesn't look good, and so on and so forth. I certainly think that among these, there are probably much stronger candidates, but what I'm trying to do with this community is make it *fandom's* decision ( ... )

;D I couldn't agree more. What has been troubling me in my corner of fandom is that people seem to be voting on the basis of flist pimpage and name recognition. I haven't seen any discussion of the various candidates' platforms or their implications, which I find troubling, because not all of these people have a fandom-first policy, and it seems like shooting ourselves in the foot to unite behind a candidate who isn't necesarily going to represent our interests.

Maybe instead of just having a poll, which perhaps is only replicating this problem, you could encourage a discussion of each candidate's pros and cons? I'm not sure people are aware of the significant differences among the various platforms.

Hmm, I could certainly emphasize that more, yes.

ETA: I think I've made it clearer that we welcome more discussion. Please let me know if my edits help address your (very valid) issues?

gfemale is actually qfemale - with a Q, not a G. Other than that, I support this idea.
