Martha tried not to feel self-conscious or embarrassed at the small side glances that Rodney kept slipping in her direction. It really wasn't something to which she was accustomed; men in her experience either ogled outright, making her feel like a piece of meat, or darted furtive glances at her and ran in the other direction, which made her feel like some mysterious unobtainable being. Rodney really didn't want to let her hand go when she knelt next to his hermit crab corral, but to keep it from getting too awkward, did. Rodney's nervousness and babbling really were sweet and endearing, charming even. Maybe it was because Martha was used to men whose brains moved faster than she could keep up with, and the bursts of nervous energy, but it didn't distract her or bother her in the least.
"Rodney," Martha stopped his momentum with a gentle, but firm hand wrapping around his wrist. She tugged him back down to the sand, flashing him a winsome smile. "Honestly, I'd rather just stay here with you for a bit? We can talk, and you can show me the stars." Martha winked playfully at him. She linked her arm around and through his and patted his arm.
Rodney allowed himself to be pulled down again, and the look of surprise that registered flickered across his features. She likes me! His smile lengthened and went a bit on the lopsided side as he looked at her again, blue eyes wide open, and... very relaxed. Comfortable. He got a soft hint of a swagger in his tones as he looked up again, this time at the starry night even as his arm was looped
