I tend to split sentences this way when the speaker is pausing to gather their thoughts, or is frustrated, or in cases where the speech might be broken up, like in the middle of a fight or if the person is catching their breath, too. Hadn't really thought of using it for comedic affect, though!

That was very interesting! I don't think I'll try it though, except under extraordinary circumstances (not being P. G. Wodehouse, who could do many things that I, perhaps, can, but should not do. ;)

Thanks for this post. I hadn't really thought about the purpose of the placement before, but now that you've pointed it out, it does make sense. The usage guidelines are also helpful.
