To clarify things in my own mind, shouldn't it be "The amount of people who..."? I learned that 'who' applies to people, 'that' for objects.

The amount of people who sit in chairs.
The amount of books that are placed in chairs.

I laughed at the gif, either way! :)

That is a tricky one! I probably would've rephrased the whole thing differently, honestly. Here's Grammar Girl on the distinctions, as I don't think we've covered it and I'm not an expert in this area without some research. I think 'who' is better, though 'amount of people' is one of those gray areas. Would you mind if I used the question for an Answer sometime?
