I was just browsing the net for free web hosting with no ads. And, well I came across this, and I just noticed they're either domain or subdomain.

Just thought I'd show you guys this :D

EDIT: I just noticed that the maximum size of the ones listed there is 25 GB. But I DID notice t35.com has unlimited bandwith, and unlimited webspace, but popup ( Read more... )

The largest hosting service there is 25GB.I'm not sure that's enough for all the fan junk that will be carried and deposited in a new journal system.

The only thing I can suggest is getting a .org domain. It emphasizes the not-for-profit aspect.

To get servers that would hold fandom and fandom's occasional through-the-roof traffic, dedicated servers from a reputable hosting company will be needed. $$$ will be needed. If, however, all the fandom people who had paid accounts + userpics on LJ put that money into this project, there would certainly be enough. That is, there would certainly be enough if this journaling service was JUST hosting fandom. The pay:freeload ratio must be kept pretty small in order for this to work well and be less of a hassle for those who are organizing it ( ... )

Exactly what I was going to say. No free server is going to work, it will cost lots of money. Though if the site runs like everyone's dreaming about, I don't see why most people wouldn't pay out some cash! ♥

Can I ask why you're so wedded to the no-ads aspect? Some ad-sponsored fandom sites are pretty good, and manage to make the ads unobtrusive while still keeping the site afloat without having to beg for donations - http:///www.fireflyfans.net , for instance. The Pit of Voles is vile beyond description, but not because it has ads; its adblocking option is available to all users and yet it stays afloat just fine. I get why it's a risk - you wouldn't want to be in a position where advertisers could basically blackmail you over the site content (as happened to the mighty Facebook last week) - but if you were using a keyword ad service (Google or similar, though again I can see why you might dislike such companies) the advertisers would be at arms length from you and might not investigate the source of their every last click. It could be a more reliable funding source than account-selling.
