Bel smiled weakly but shook his head slightly. "Maybe. But people are more willing to forgive when you didn't have a soul when you...did the things you did."

"I didn't," Angel said. "Thanks, in part, to you. I'd say that's a big thing."

"I won't do that again, that's for sure," Bel said. After a moment, he reluctantly added, "I haven't been able to find Darla. There's no sign of her anywhere, not at any place I knew she spent time. There's one last place I'm checking but after that I don't know."

Angel nodded. "Darla's pretty good. If she doesn't want to be found, she won't be. There's a reason why she survived as long as she did."

Bel nodded. "I guess I was just hoping that if I found her, people would stop hating me as much." He shrugged.

Angel shrugged with his good shoulder. "Hard to say. She's not stupid. If she thinks it's too dangerous she won't come back here for years, if ever."
