Of course River would figure out what happens the first time he meets her. And of course his first Christmas will be her last. How could it be any other way for these two?

That "happy now because they'll be sad later" line struck a chord with me too *glances at half-finished fic* -- it is clearly something the Doctor has considered often, and it fits so well with his relationship with River.
