Rogue remembers her mother singing to her when she was a little girl. Her voice was low and soothing and helped calm her when she had nightmares. She couldn’t remember her mother’s touch, no matter how hard she tried, nor could she remember much of what the woman looked like. She was a ghost and the harder she tried to grasp on to the images of her, the further away they wandered.

She looked down at the little boy curled up in her arms, his blonde curls matted to his hair because of the sweat forming on his brow. Brushing hair from his face, his skin protected from her powers by the gloves she wore, she sighed, wondering what her son would remember of her. Would it be rough leather dancing across his skin or her hollowed voice, unable to carry any tune?

All I inherited from my mother was my eyes, she thought, placing the boy back down on his bed. His eyes opened, looking up at her with wonder. She stroked her hand across his forehead. Just like you did from me, she thought as she looked into his green eyes.

He reached up for her, one of his chubby hands grasping around her finger and pulling it back towards him. She smiled as he babbled before releasing her as he reached back up, silently asking to be picked up. Rogue happily acquiesced, placing him on her hip and walking him around his room, savoring this bit of contact with him.

Their next mission would keep her occupied and she didn’t know how much time she would be able to spend with him. He laid his head on her shoulder, thumb in his mouth, his gaze locked on her face. “Hush-a-bye,” Rogue started, her voice low, remembering the words of her favorite lullaby. “Don’t you cry. Go to sleep little baby.”

He cooed before closing his eyes and she continued, rocking him back and forth as she walked the room, singing the song. Slowly, he fell to sleep, his face showing contentment as she laid him down, covering his small form. “Now I lay me down to sleep,” she started, placing a kiss on her fingers. She continued the prayer, ending it by touching her fingers to his head.

“You need my touch,” Rogue said with a sigh, brushing her fingers across his cheek.

“We will find a way, my love,” Magneto said from behind her and she turned, startled to find him there.

She let him pull her close and wrap an arm around her waist. He touched their child’s cheek and she looked away, envying him for that brief contact. “I promise,” Magneto continued, caressing her cheek and tugging her out of the room. “We have much to do.”

She leaned into him, accepting his comfort as they walked towards the control room. Glancing back, Rogue added a silent prayer, hoping to keep her family safe during these tumultuous times.
