When to test?

Nov 20, 2010 10:35

So... I looked it up on FF, and they say it's basically not useful to test before 14 DPO. This is a bit worrisome. My usual LP is only 9 days. This is my second cycle on Prometrium, and that only lenghtens my luteal phase to 11 days. Obviously I will be frantically trying to get in touch with my doc to ask about this, but for those of you who've ( Read more... )

I don't have any experience with being on progesterone, however the people that I know who have taken it will take it until about 13 or 14DPO and if they get a positive test will continue taking it, if not they will discontinue. I don't know the exact length of time, but I thought that if progesterone was needed most women stayed on it until later in the first trimester when the placenta took over the creation of the hormones?

I'm also on prometrium. I was told by my RE to start it on 3DPO and continue for 14 days. On the next morning, test. If it's negative, stop taking the prometrium and my period came 3 days later. If it's positive, continue to take it. I'm unsure how the progesterone only lengthened your luteal phase to 11 days, since you won't get your period while on it..... maybe your doc gave you different directions?

Thanks. Since we were not TTC, I was not taking the Prometrium for the short luteal phase, but since I do have a short luteal phase, we think that low progesterone and/or wildly fluctuating estrogen levels may be contributing to my migraines and severe period pain. So the plan was to try out Prometrium for a few cycles to see if it helps (and after 1.5 cycles, I'll give a tentative yes, it seems to help). So, currently, I take 100mg(?)on days 5-15, and 200mg on days 16-27 which, when I have a normal cycle and ovulate on day 17 like I usually do, gives me an 11-day luteal phase. This cycle it looks like I may have ovulated on day 11 instead (oops!), so... my current dosage schedule would take me a little past 14DPO if I counted right.

gotcha. I now noticed this was in fam, not trying4ababy. So I can see how your dosages would be different. :)

Seems to me it would make sense to take it until either AF shows up or you hit 14 DPO and can test for pregnancy. A pregnancy test is unlikely to be useful much before then. What day are you on now? Hopefully before you get to 14 DPO you can consult with your doc.

Unless I'm totally reading the chart wrong, I'm At 6 DPO, so I still have time to get in touch with my doc-- planning to call the office Monday.

I was told to take the prometrium until I got my period. (I was only told to take it from ovulation onward every cycle.) When I did get pregnant, the doctor kept me on the prometrium through my first trimester.

Thanks! I have an appointment coming up with my doc to ask, but it's reassuring to have at least a little bit of an idea what to expect.

Thanks all who commented. Being patient was really hard. I started my period on 15DPO even with the Prometrium, and all pee tests were negative on 12 and 14 DPO, so not pregnant, yay!
