I used fam to help me conceive my daughter after 6 months of trying. Well she was born in September and I'm wondering how good FAM is while breastfeeding. I let a friend borrow my book so can anyone help me out. My daughter is breastfeed (no formula and only the occasional bottle of breastmilk when I'm away from her) and I haven't had a period ( Read more... )

I'm in LAM (Lactational Amennohrea) myself. My son was born August 11th. From my previous two experiences with LAM, you will know you're fertile when your secretions return and when your cervixs changes, just like before. But since you don't have any clue when that could happen, you have to be diligent about using protection. Temping at that point will be helpful, but it is hard to determine when to start up. With LAM, you increase your chances of getting pregnant when you start weaning, especially night weaning. And in saying weaning, I mean introducing anything other than the breast, so food, bottles etc. An occasional bottle is not a big deal, though. :)

Bah that was what I was thinking! Think we will use a back up method all the time....not ready for baby number two yet :)

It's tricky to know when your fertility is returning. I thought it was a couple of times between my first and second pregnancies but was wrong. My period stayed away for 20 months, although I had spotting about a month before it came back. I pretty much followed the seven standards of ecological breastfeeding for the first year (although I would usually stay in bed during my daughter's nap and read or use the laptop rather than sleeping). The second year, we started using a stroller a bit, there was a week-long nursing strike at 18 months, I had my first night away from my daughter, and after a year and a half we did some nightweaning and starting her in a separate bed for the night.

My cycles were pretty much my normal when they did come back, except that the first period was quite a bit heavier. It took us 4 cycles of trying to get pregnant again, but it turned out to be fraternal twins (ie. 2 eggs). I was never getting consistent enough sleep to bother temping.
