Definitely diary! Partly because journal simply does not evoke the same image, and partly because of the delightful twofoldness: diary as in daily journal, as well as diary as in calendar.

I would, however, put it as two separate sentences. "Good girls keep a diary. Smart girls never leave evidence behind." Or possibly "Good girls keep a diary; smart girls never leave evidence behind.". Yep, I probably prefer that last one.

Well, that's the same reason I as well prefer 'diary', but I do think that the twofoldness of 'journal' is pretty awesome as well... gah! Decisions! And two sentences is a good idea. Probably work out something where they're on separate lines as well... more decisions!
