I watched a man at work today come to my checkout till in a wheelchair. He couldn't move and couldn't talk because his body had over the course of time stopped responding to him. I helped him put the milk and the oatmeal on the ledge so I could scan it, watching with this odd feeling of recognition as he struggled slowly to give me money from his ( Read more... )

I still haven't been able to find a word to describe what I feel when I see sick people. Not just cold and sniffles. But physically and visibly sick. Like the man in the wheelchair. It's mostly probably a combination of fear, disgust, pity, sorrow and questioning. Should there be someone who is responsible?

Sometimes when I go shopping I see these people (always mostly alone) walking or limping or staring or rolling down the aisles of shops. There's something wrong with the world. And I don't think it's ever going to be fixed.

I had an incident about a month before I moved from my hometown, where there was a woman who was incapacitated (to be honest I thought she was drunk or high, being Sunday morning), she was falling down the street just infront of me. In the corner of my eye I saw a young guy coming in our direction, so I thought that maybe he's her son or something ( ... )

Unfortunately we've all been in that position. And unfortunately sometimes it's worse than just helping someone get up. Sometimes it's us standing by while other people get harassed, threatened, stabbed... it goes on. Like Kitty Genovese ( ... )
