This is exactly the situation I was in, though I've never been in a car crash before. I never wanted to drive, and it always made me nervous, and while people said I was fine - I never really felt GOOD at it. But I'm going to college in two months, age 17, and MUST learn how to drive to commute.

I just got my liscence...a month ago, about? Not even. Earlier in June. And I swear, I'm making excuses to get out of the house and drive now. I love it. It's SO much different when you can drive by yourself. I was so scared that I wouldn't be able to handle it but it's really so easy, and you can relax and not have to worry about someone scrutinizing you. So I say, work hard and get your liscence ASAP - because once it's off your back you really will start to enjoy driving. I thought that I'd hate hate hate it as I did while I was learning, but now it's totally different. =)

Thanks :) I kinda had a mini epiphany a day or two ago when I was helping one of my friends revise for her theory test that she had in the evening. I suddenly had the initiative to try and pass asap, so I've got a book that tells me every question they could ask on the test, and I'm just gonna learn them all, pass my theory and see what happens after that.

I'm wondering whether it was my instructor that was making me feel unenthused, really. I phoned him to organise a lesson 5 days ago, left a message on his answer phone and he hasn't got back to me. =/ Think I'll get a new one.

But yeah, I hope I'll feel like you do when I start driving for real, I just really need to get past both tests, at least then I'll legally be able to drive and won't have the pressure of having to pass.

I never wanted to get my licence either. I find driving to be very stressful, but my parents really wanted me to have it, so I got it when I was 18. However, I drove I think twice in the week after I got it, and that's it. I haven't used it since, and I'm now 29 *lol*

I am fortunate to live in a city with a good public transportation system, so I can easily get away with not driving. But, since you're completely dependent on a car to get around, I'd say definitely go for your licence.

Maybe you could practice with someone other than your instructor (like a parent) to help you build up your confidence? I think the key is to gain experience that will make you feel at ease, make you feel like you're in control behind the wheel.

Wow, glad I'm not the only one :) I probably will carry on using it after I pass, as it's kinda a necessity for me until I like, move in with someone or can afford to be chauffered around or live in a place where I can use public transport, heh.

I could do that, but I'm not allowed on the road without insurance...and my parents can't really afford it and I don't want to ask them. They don't know if they can afford the insurance for when I DO pass my test, so I think that's another reason why I'm a bit apprehensive about driving.
