Chapter 3: Family issues
Tora searched his pockets for the third time that day. He was sure he had some money for cigarettes in those trousers; where could that money actually go? He looked everywhere, desks, shelves and vases, nowhere to be found. That was strange! Or, he was careless...
"Hey, Saga, did you see any money around the house? Not much, just some pocket change!” his low voice echoed from the bedroom to the laundry room, where the blond alien was.
“N-No, not at all!” Saga quickly answered back. Too quickly. “To-Tora, can you come here for a bit to see if I am doing it right?”
“Coming!” The taller man sighed and left his room, following the humming sounds from the other man. “I wonder, do you call me all the time! There's no way you could do something like that-oh my God, you are doing it wrong!”
His voice betrayed a lot of stress as the room was full of paint stains and in the middle of it was Saga, with a dirty old uniform Tora had and a long brush in his right arm. The walls he was supposed to paint light blue were partly that color and partly the old one, while the floor was almost blue instead of white, as the tiles used to be.
“I can't believe this...” Tora tried to calm himself down by rubbing his temples. “It's just moving the brush up and down, what's so damn hard? Give that to me, you will carry out those boxes. Carefully!” His hand pointed at some boxes in a corner and the blond followed his instructions.
Though it was hard to be seen, their relationship was better. Yes, they were still arguing everyday and acting like kids, but something was different between them. So, that room was the proof of their slightly better relationship. The old laundry room that was going to become Saga's new bedroom, though he would keep the washing machine inside because Tora didn't have any other place to put it. The couch was uncomfortable and the alien would never leave his sample to live in an apartment nearby-No way! How will I examine you then?- so, it was the last and only solution. Tora found some furniture he didn't need and a small and old, cringy bed that was much better than the couch! Painting, some good cleaning, and soon the room would be ready for the other man to lock himself in and leave the poor tiger in peace, finally!
“I told you carefully!” the dark-haired man emphasized his words at the sight of a Saga with wobbly feet, moving around. A brow was cocked in question. “Well, that's something new!” he blurted out amused. “The strong Saga ready to fall due to a little box?”
“Shut up, will you?” the blond growled, covering the other's disturbing laughter. He let the box down with a thud and moved in for the next one. “It's the fact that I can't see that- woah!”
Exactly. He couldn't see. He couldn't see a rug he himself had dropped a while ago. An old, dusty rug, whose existence was noticed only when Saga's foot slipped forward, his weight moving back as he finally fell on his butt on the floor, after a small funny show and throwing the box's contents out of it. And the other man would have laughed his heart out if Saga hadn't throw that certain box.
Saga froze at the coldness inside Tora's eyes, eyes almost expressionless. “I... Sorry... I really shouldn't do that eh?”
Feeling nervous like never before, Saga averted his eyes from the taller man and focused on the scattered things around him. “I better collect those again...” He nodded to himself. “Fortunately everything is safe!” The blond leaned to tidy everything up, it was the least he could do. But before he could do anything Tora dashed to him, grabbing back whatever Saga was holding.
“It's ok, I can do that alone! Continue with the other-”
It was already late. Saga had not only noticed what he was keeping, but he also took his sweet time to examine it carefully. For this box didn't store old plates or glasses like the others, nor unused clothes. This box stored photographs, albums, small keepsakes. And the photo he was holding was scratched on the one side, cutting a person off, while two more figures appeared in it. A woman with enigmatic smile and those beautiful hazel eyes he knew from somewhere and a small ten year old boy, looking serious and grumpy even, his brows frowning like... Like...
“Give that back to me please...” A dead serious voice and a strong hand pressing his wrist. Saga looked surprised when he faced the man again and maybe that was the reason he didn't act like his usual self. Instead, he let the photo drop to Tora's palm instantly and a curious expression enlightened his violet eyes.
“I was wandering about that...” he mumbled in thought. “Living alone and not a single picture of any relative around... That looks strange...”
Tora answered with his silence, still collecting the scattered photos. And that silence awakened Saga's curiosity even more. “You know,” he made his tone sound formal and serious as he cleared his throat. “As a researcher, I need to know the family status of my sample. It helps to understand your behavior and-”
“Sorry but...” Tora cut him off as he finished packing and stood up with the box in his hands, “you won't hear about this sample's family. Deal with it...” And without any more words, the dark-haired man moved back to his bedroom, ignoring the other who was following him impatiently.
“You promised me to let me do my job!” his thin index finger was moving in a threatening way, pointing at Tora. “And my job involves this!”
Tora was not even looking at him, searching for a clean shirt in his closet. “I’ll be late to work again...” he hissed under his breath and took in his hands the one he was looking for.
“Tora~” the blond warned in a whining way.
“What?” the other threw back, looking rather disturbed with the situation. “Will you let me dress up now or do I have to strip for you?”
His tone was rude and blunt but Saga knew better than back out at times like this. Feeling his stubbornness fully awake, the alien pressed his back on the wall next to the door, crossing his arms in determination.
“I'd like to see that...” he stated simply. “Especially when I don't get any answers!”
Again, the only answer he got was a violent grabbing of his shoulders as Tora shoved him out of the room and locked the door.
“Get the hell out!”
“You know I can break this thin wood easily, right?”
Tora rolled his eyes at Saga's mocking voice. “Yeah, yeah...” he started tiredly, stretching the words in his mouth. “I know about your incredible strength and your super weapon already! Gee... Threat me as much as you want, I just won't speak about it!” he said simply, leaving the blond with a permanent pout.
Saga was cornered. The usual tricks wouldn't be useful to persuade the man... But Saga wouldn't lose. He needed to know more about Tora! For his research...
“Alright...” He calmly accepted Tora's words, although his posture didn't show any calmness at all. “I'll come with you!”
And with that he moved inside his new to be room, searching for clean clothes and a coat.
"Not so fast, Saga...” Tora entered the room soon after, picking something up on his way there. Something that had nothing to do with his classy clothes.
“Of course feel free to visit the coffee-shop...” As much as he tried, it was difficult to hide an amused smile as he threw the object he was holding inside Saga's hands. “But before that...” A spatula. “Scratch any inch of blue on my floor and then do the rest of the walls. After that, you can come.”
“What?” the other screamed surprised. “What did you say?”
“Happy scratching!” was all Tora said before he pat the other encouragingly on the shoulder and left for his work.
“I really hate that guy...” Saga whined in the silence around him, kneeling on the floor and deciding from which corner he should start. The whole floor was a blue mess anyway!
*****
The small bell rang at the coffee-shop's door and two figures stepped inside. A tall and slim one, who was searching the place carefully and a shorter one accompanying him, looking around impressed.
“This place is so nice! It's good that you chose to come here instead of staying in the comic store this time!” Hiroto grinned happily and looked around for a place to sit. A wonderful smell was tickling his nose and he would love to discover what it was. “Oh, look!” his shining eyes spotted a small table for two close to the window. “What about-”
“THIS ONE!” Saga screamed, making many of the customers stare at him. With his hand he was pointing at a large table deep inside the place, with low lights and located close to the toilets. Hiroto's eyes widened in disappointment as the headed to their table. “This one is dark and-”
“I like it!” Saga snapped happily, checking with the corner of his eyes for the dark-haired waiter, whose post was the tables around that area. They sat and looked at the menus, deciding what to take.
“I can't wait to order!” the blond alien said mostly to himself with a rather amused expression.
“You won't wait for that long then!” a voice sounded right beside him, cheering and lively. Not the voice he was waiting for.
“I knew I would see you again sometime, Saga-san! And with a cute company too!” Shou flashed an extra smile for Saga's guest, making the shorter boy smile back, maybe awkwardly and embarrassed, but it was still sweet.
“So, what would you like?” Shou spoke again kindly.
“Tora please!” Saga's answer made Hiroto look at him in question and Shou grin in a teasing manner.
“I always knew it...” the waiter said in thought. “You are here for him again, huh?”
Yes, Saga was there to find Tora, but something was telling him that this was the wrong answer. And not only that, something in the way Shou was staring at him, grinning fully and not innocently at all, was making the skin on his face hot and sweaty, he couldn't even look back at the other man!
“I mean he is the one who serves in this... shift... ?” Shit! After that question he felt even more uncomfortable!
“Anyway...” Shou changed the subject without losing his teasing manner though. “Tora had something to do and sent me in his place to assist you... And I am kinder and better than him!” He winked at his patients, making Hiroto blush hard before he spelled out his order after Saga. His eyes were locked at the tall waiter till he was out of sight. Only then he was ready to focus at his blond friend again and the question he was willing to ask for a while.
“Who is Tora?” The smaller guy raised a brow as Saga leaned back on his chair to make himself comfortable. Or better, to try to feel comfortable.
“A friend...” the alien answered with no interest. “Just a stupid friend...”
*****
Tora was humming on his way home after work. He was mumbling an old song he remembered liking as he was walking slowly back, spending time to check closed clothing and music stores or to smoke an extra cigarette. He was enjoying the situation he was in and nothing would change that. At that thought his humming voice became even more melodic and he started sulking around more than before. His mind displayed the events of that afternoon, moment by moment from when Saga entered the place till he walked out really pissed off. Hiding the huge grin on his mouth was impossible at the memory of a pouty, angry Saga, as nothing came out from that visit in the shop-Ha! Tora raised a brow in irony, feeling satisfied. As if it would be that easy for the alien to learn what he wanted! And he was so nosy, always asking for a waiter's help! Tora was lucky when he heard that well known voice shouting in mere happiness, and he was even luckier that he was heading to the kitchen at that certain time. Shou was a pain in the ass but he was a friend nonetheless, so, after a lot of teasing and some promised free drinks, his best friend offered to assist him. And it turned out to be a blessing for the wide-eyed man, as Saga's questions and answers created more suspicions to him. Teasing became worse and Saga was surely an old lover of his, according to Shou's deductions, but he got rid of the blond alien for the rest of the night till he left infuriated with his friend. And that was worth all the embarrassment he got later.
Tora's eyes furrowed at the thought of Saga's friend. That little, constantly smiling guy. Was he an alien or he was from earth? And was there actually a person who could deal with Saga so much that they could hang out? Hmmm, maybe that boy was silly and weirdo like him, alien or not... But again, Saga was hiding his true, mean self behind an oh so cute and kind mask! Tora nodded, he was sure now. That boy had fallen in Saga's evil trap.
His eyes widened and his feet halted as a new conclusion came to rest in his head. Maybe... Just maybe... Was that person his lover or what? Saga's built was not different from an average human's, so he could have a relationship or intercourse if he wanted... and the blond was rather perverted at many things, even the simplest ones! A gulp, along with a small tension in his stomach. Anxiety dominated him, a feeling bad and unwanted.
“Whatever...” he sighed in frustration as he was finally reaching home. Maybe Saga having a lover was a good idea, even falling in love. Then that stupid UFO wouldn't stalk and torture Tora that much!
The moment he stepped in the apartment he felt a pair of eyes piercing right through him. That and a dark, murderous aura. That was a thing to make him feel more excited. Inside the living room, a rather quiet Saga was laying on the couch, folded inside a blanket and preparing himself for sleep, although his eyes were sleepless.
“How was work?” he hissed behind his teeth, pretending to watch a boring show.
“Oh, fine! Calm, without any disturbing problems...” Tora's smirk was making Saga want to erase its stupid existence as violent as he could. The dark-haired man hung his coat and moved into the room, winking at the other man. “How was your date?”
That was it! Saga jumped up, throwing the blanket carelessly on the floor and moved closer to Tora.
“I'll follow you day and night, lunch or sleep, pee or shower! I'll become your shadow till you tell me what is wrong! I really need those information for my research and-”
His words died on his lips when he realized that Tora was not giving a damn about his threats. Instead he went calmly in the kitchen, taking a beer from the fridge. Yeah, alcohol would help him stay in control...
“Become whatever you want but,” he sat across to Saga who was plopped on the couch again, opened his can and swallowed a big sip. “you'll never get in here!” With his index finger he pointed at his brain and smiled mockingly at the blond. A move that made Saga grin back at him in a challenging manner.
“We'll see about that...” he mumbled under his breath in a warning.
The taller man decided to ignore him and focused on the TV instead. The show Saga was watching had finished, had given its turn to a politics talk show. So boring... Yet... Something those people were talking about reminded him of things he thought lost in dusty corners in his mind. Old classmates, stressful exams, a man whom he never managed to approach... himself in blue shorts running after a cat happily, a tall woman with hazel eyes like his own laughing from a far... What was that? That was strange, all those had nothing to do with politics, but his memory didn't stop producing pictures. Pictures he treasured and others he wanted to forget. More images with that woman, worrying for him when he was playing outside till late at night. And a serious man with clod eyes, never being satisfied with anything...
It was like carrying something heavy inside him. A weight he would never be able to lift. He curled himself in a small ball, cupping his head between his arms. He didn't know what that was, but the images were turning more and more horrifying. Tora was now scared, he wanted that nightmare to stop. But that nightmare was just growing bigger...
A black, sad coffin. The woman was lying there not smiling anymore. He as a teenager was crying rivers of tears around people who couldn't understand how it was to lose someone you love dearly. People who felt pity for him, people who he hated. And the serious man just standing away from him, doing nothing. Denying to give to that young boy some of the warmth he had forever lost. The same man returning drank at home, angry, mad. Keeping a low profile outside his house and taking all of his hatred and anger on someone who was innocent. His dark side growing, becoming a monster, a beast that devoured anything good that was left back by the smiling woman. Shouts, rebellious screams, himself at seventeen leaving home one night with a suitcase, heading anywhere his feet would take him...
The air around him was becoming sober, the oxygen never reaching his lungs. Out of nothing a theatrical play started in his mind, with terrorizing scenes and bad actors. Without any reason, none at all. Or… Tora's eyes were locked with the ones of the man across to him. Eyes scared, dark, drowned in sorrow. Saga's lithe body was shaking though the room was hot, his teeth were cringing like he was naked in snow. Ready to tear up, to scream the pain he was tasting, although it was just a small bit. It would always be small compared to the pain Tora felt several years ago. His lips were forming dead words, trying to spell with a broken voice one and only word.
Sorry...
“Make it stop!” Tora's scream pierced Saga's heart and he stopped ravaging the other's mind. He jumped and ran close to him, trying to comfort him, trying to reduce the damage he made.
“I am so sorry Tora, I-”
A push away.
“Are you satisfied now?” a voice cold and soulless, that scared Saga the most. “Was that enough or do you want more show?”
“I... I never thought that-”
“It would be that bad?” Tora laughed in irony. “Won't that make your research juicier now?”
“I am an idiot, okay?” Saga's voice broke, showing weakness in front of Tora for the first time. “I did one of the stupidest things in my life!”
“At least you admit it...” Tora drank a big amount of his beer, he surely needed that. He had learned to forget all the bad things and keep only the lessons he took from them, but experiencing that time of his life so boldly... He wiped cold sweat from his forehead as he started calming down again. But he was still infuriated with Saga.
“How are we going to cooperate like this?” He asked, looking deep inside those violet eyes. “Violating my privacy, putting your nose in things you shouldn't... I don't know if that will work out anymore...”
Saga took a big breath. He was confused, sad and frustrated. He was holding a messed up thread in his hands and he didn't know from where to start untying it.
“I don't know if I ever had parents or not,” he began. “My first memories are from an orphanage and a strict headmistress. I was a naughty kid, so I felt punishment on my ribs many times. My life had no interest till I entered University, as you call it here. I was quite bright and I loved the idea of life in other planets, beings like us moving in a place like ours, yet so different...” His violet eyes darkened in an instant. “Then I came here... You know the rest...”
Tora was examining the blond man carefully, trying to read behind that face of his.
“I know how to use some places in my brain, that's how I... M-Many of us can do that, as of my strength, an average trait too I guess... You earthlings are weak... I have no one to care about except a close and precious friend. He is the only one I miss from home...”
The dark-haired man would have smiled in a different occasion, but not then. He kept looking at Saga, curled close to his own legs on the floor. So that was a fair exchange, huh? Though it didn't look that fair for him.
“You are hiding something, right?” Fear and secrets were things that Tora could recognize without any mind reading powers.
“I learned your childhood, you learned mine,” the blond shrugged his shoulders, though he was feeling far more uncomfortable. “Not the fairest deal, I know, but only one way exists to correct anything...” He gulped. “I can erase everything from your brain and leave you alone, I messed up after all and I deserve to-”
A sudden press at his shoulder surprised Saga. He stopped talking and looked back at Tora. The taller man was serious and how couldn't he be? That was regret glistening inside the alien's violet eyes and fear, great fear. How could he let Saga leave just like that, when he knew more than anyone how it is to be scared? No matter how things were, he was not going to leave Saga alone, at least not for now. Something inside him was saying he could trust him, an instinct he was going to listen to. After a last warning, that is.
“Don't ever read my mind again.” His low voice showed that he wouldn't accept that for a second time, something that was also showed by a stronger pressure at Saga's body. The blond nodded, never losing eye contact with the dark-haired man, attempting to earn his trust this time.
“It's a promise...” he whispered soothingly, hoping that he could ease a bit Tora's wounds. Just a tiny bit...
