Chapter 2: A better sample?
Loud steps and quick breaths echoed on the road as Saga stomped out of the house after he slammed the door hard behind him. Somewhere inside, in the bathroom or kitchen maybe, Tora kept shouting and whining but the blond couldn’t care less. He had his own anger to deal with; he couldn’t stand Tora one more morning being grumpy and moody. The last four days had been like that, ever since Shou met Saga after that stalking incident. The dark blond seemed to like Saga’s company so much that he kept asking about him, not to mention the dirty jokes about Tora’s secret relationship. So, every morning and night, Tora was expressing his dislike for the situation with all the means he could, how Saga ruined everything and got involved in his life and how much of an idiot the blond was if he couldn’t do his job right. And Saga was cursing his fate for choosing that idiotic man for his research! What was it he found in him again? He couldn’t remember anymore. All that pressure couldn’t let him do his work calmly! Five days on earth examining Tora and the only thing he noticed well was how an angry man reacted! This was more tiring and disturbing than fun! Saga exhaled loudly and focused on the road. A shop was across to him, with books with pictures, comics as Tora had corrected him many times at home. It would be nice exploring that place and maybe his nerves would calm down too… Giving no more thought to it, he stepped inside the store and started checking the shelves. Clearing his mind would be helpful.
A cover drew his attention instantly. Dark blue font and lots of stars and planets… He should expect that! Curious of how people on Earth think about aliens, he grabbed the book and started reading it. The story started like his own one, an alien visiting earth. People never believed in life in outer space and that’s where Saga agreed with the author. Earthlings needed many years to pass to start thinking seriously about this… possibility. That author was on a good way though… But his imagination was a disaster! Green skin and three eyes? No doubt Tora couldn’t believe that he was an alien then! Gee, why should everything different look monstrous? But then again, he would love seeing Tora wetting his pants over a creature like that, ha! Saga laughed heartily with the hilarious image he made in his mind and closed the comic satisfied. He would buy this one with some money he snatched from Tora’s pockets.
“The alien image might be odd but I like the story…” he mumbled contently to himself but it seemed that someone listened to his comment.
“I agree! The plot is really good, but the green three-eyed things, dear God! If aliens exist, I am sure they would look like us, more or less!”
Saga turned his head back in shock to face the one who startled him. A bleached-haired boy, shorter than him, with happy brown eyes and a big, sweet smile. The boy was looking enthusiastically back at him but he got nervous as Saga didn’t talk nor move.
“Errr… Sorry for the interruption…” he mumbled awkwardly, scratching his head. “I work here and… I get excited when I see people like this comic! It’s rare and a good one!”
His hyper moves made Saga smile back at the boy. Finally a happy person in this planet! Not a grumpy, stupid ass like Tora! Uh… Why did he have to remember him again?
“I don’t mind your interruption…” Saga said in a warm voice, after locking the thoughts about Tora at the back of his mind. “On the contrary, I am interested in your ideas… You seem to like stars, right?”
“Like them?” the young man laughed. “I love them and everything that has to do with them! It's so exciting learning about new planets and galaxies, discovering all the secrets this world hides!”
“Yeah, it is…” Saga smiled at the shorter one, that grin on the boy’s lips was the same with his own some days ago, when he discovered one of this world’s secrets, named Earth. He kept listening to the blond boy talking about many planetic systems, nodding at much of the information he already knew and getting more and more impressed. That boy looked young, yet he had so much knowledge! He was smart, funny and really entertaining! Too much of a talker maybe, but Saga couldn’t get enough of it. Listening about things he knew, things reminding of home.
“So…” Saga started after a big monologue of the other. “What about your theory? That one with… aliens? Do you believe they exist?”
They boy grinned shyly as he followed Saga around the store, searching for more interesting comics for him.
“Uhmm… I know it might sound silly but… yeah I do! I mean… the world is so big and it’s so selfish to think that only us in earth exist… Oh! You should try this one too!” he quickly handed him another comic as they moved ahead and Saga accepted it kindly.
“It’s not silly at all, you know, I happen to embrace that theory of yours too... But what about aliens being similar to y-us, in Earth?” Sweat was formed up the alien’s brows, that was close! But the shop’s assistant didn’t seem to notice anything, all fired up with their talk as he was.
“Life on earth exists because there are good enough circumstances for survival and evolvement. Those circumstances can’t be that different at another system! Maybe there will be some small differences, but the main characteristics would be the same! So… You get it, right?” He stopped to satisfy himself with Saga’s positive nod and before the taller blond could ask his next question, it was already answered. “And yeah, I believe that aliens have visited Earth during that long time, why not? Maybe one of them is close to us right now!” The boy giggled and made Saga wear an amused expression.
“Really?” he teased. “With your talking it sounds like I could be an alien too!” Saga grinned with his own statement, telling the truth even if it was hidden behind a joke felt nice.
“Yeah you could…” the other chuckled, crossing his arms. “But you are not. I'm not that lucky…”
And with that the boy excused himself and left to help another customer who was asking for assistance. Neither of them wanted to stop that conversation but neither of them wanted the boy to lose his job either. So, they just parted quickly, hoping that maybe one day they could meet and talk again… And they did.
Saga visited the store the next day and the next, talking to that boy and learning more about him such as his name and that they had a lot in common. He and Hiroto, as that boy’s name was, became friends soon enough and Saga was more than happy, making his first friend on that planet! Because no, Tora couldn’t pass as a friend with all those fights. And things were only getting worse, both of them exchanging only curses and gun threats. That was not how Saga wanted the things. Maybe that night on the street, he should have let Tora go. Maybe two or three days later he would meet Hiroto and make him his sample, examining his life and having a friend at the same time. Well, it was late now… Or was it not?... Since the day he met that energetic boy a thought was tempting Saga’s mind. Maybe he could just erase Tora’s memory and start over with a new sample. Though he would be more careful this time! Maybe that was the best solution. Tora was angry with him for affecting his life; he was not happy and neither was Saga. And the blond alien was sure about it, Tora would love to return to his old life again. He would be happy without Saga screwing up. But… This was not an easy decision. He chose Tora for a reason. Fate maybe?... Saga was hesitating. Something was aching inside him at the thought of getting out of Tora’s life permanently. Something he would miss…
Although leaving things as they were was not a solution either. A change for the better couldn’t be done, so, erasing Tora’s memory seemed the best thing to do at the time being. And like that, as those thoughts were mixing in his head in a crazy dance, the sixth night after he met Hiroto, Saga finally decided. He was going to erase Tora’s memory and leave the guy alone.
*****
That fateful night Saga stayed home, waiting for Tora to return. He didn’t examine his sample at all, leaving the man the chance to relax. He didn’t even visit Hiroto! This was supposed to be Tora’s last day as his sample, and Saga would share all of his time with him. He wasn’t going to explain to Tora what he would do, it was already painful enough and the possibility of hearing the dark-haired man all happy about it wouldn’t help much. He tried not to feel nervous about it, but his trembling limbs showed the exact opposite.
“Everything will be alright…” he kept repeating to himself, “A few minutes playing with his mind and that’s it, the end…”
And that word was creating a knot in his throat… The end…
A sudden opening of the main door scared the crap out of him, making him jump and shout in a high tone. Then steps, Tora’s strong and calm steps as he entered the house. Maybe Saga was living with Tora about a week or so, but he had already learned the other’s daily program. Reaching home, whining, throwing his jacket away, shower, some more whining, coffee, living room. He decided to let the man finish that ceremony of his before he could set his memory up, so he stayed in Tora’s bedroom, waiting for the right time to act. Unfortunately something ruined his plans as Tora stepped out of his schedule, entering the room hesitantly. When their eyes locked both of them felt nervous but Tora moved further, reaching Saga and sitting close to him.
“I have something to tell you…” he said after a small awkward pause.
Saga’s eyes widened in surprise, talking about timing! “I… I have something to tell you too…” the blond answered back, puzzled about what Tora would say to him.
“Ok…” Tora brushed his hair out of his eyes, he couldn’t stand anything disturbing him for the moment. “I’ll talk first then…” he made sure to wear a serious expression as he got ready to talk.
“No, I’ll talk first!” Saga cut him off before he could even start.
“No! It’s my house and I decide!” Tora protested loudly. And it started again. Only a minute together and they were already arguing!
“Yeah, but I have the gun!” Saga shot a victorious smile, he knew that there was nothing the other could do. Slowly, he moved closer to the taller man and let his fingers slightly touch Tora’s shirt as they moved upwards to cup his face. The dark-haired man was already freaking out, trying to move away and ready to shout a new curse.
“Relax,” Saga consulted. “Just give me some time and everything will be fine…”
Tora wanted to bite his nose instead but he was immobilized at the view of the red gun at the blond’s waist. Was he kind of molesting-examining him again? Darn it! Saga was so close, too close, his well shaped lips deliciously trembling a breath away from his own, they could ki-no! Tora felt his throat burning. Saga was so not going to do this and if he dared to, gun or not, he would be a dead alien afterwards! Driving away any kissing images his mind had made, the taller man ignored the shiver in his spine and focused on what the alien was trying to do. After some careful notice, he saw that Saga’s lips were not trembling. The man was counting something, something only he could see. His eyes were set on Tora’s ones, or maybe far deeper, and he was not moving even an inch from his place. He was fully concentrating at whatever he was doing and Tora could only wander if Saga was nuts or if all that was another weird alien-thingy.
“Just a bit more…” Saga pulled the words out slowly.
“Three”
“Two”
“One…”
The phone rang. With it’s stupid ringing noise, piercing the blond’s eardrums and destroying everything at the last moment. Saga was sitting in awe, with Tora’s face still between his hands, cursing inwardly whoever was on the line and mourning about his lost try. It was his first time, he had tried so hard! Couldn’t that stupid person appreciate that and hang up the phone already? But no. That person insisted, and Tora was losing his patience.
“Saga… If you have the kindness…Could you please leave my head alone to answer the call?”
Saga’s last hope that he made it before he was interrupted withered away as he heard his name. With mechanical moves he let Tora slip out of his arms and followed him with his eyes until he was out of the room, where he answered the phone.
Saga was in shock, his attempt to start over was lost. Should he try again, when Tora would return back or not? Questions, questions and more questions, he was tired drowning himself in a river of those! A word was locked inside his heart, devouring him from the inside. Fate. Was it really luck that he met Tora? He let out a confused whine as he hide his face in his arms. Think. He needed to think.
“Yeah Shou, I'm alone…” Tora’s annoyed voice echoed louder than before. So, it was Shou who ruined everything! To hell with him! And Saga had started to like that guy…
“No, I am not lying… What? Where the hell could I find Saga to bring him here? ... Fuck you, Shou!”
Saga chuckled over the dark-haired man’s words. Tora sounded irritated, yes, but there was a funny side to the situation at the moment. A funny side that the blond alien wished to see more often to the other man. He started biting his lips in frustration when he realized what he was thinking about. He felt his emotions softening and his resolve weakening. Maybe five minutes ago he was sure about it, but right then he had no idea about what he wanted to do. And that was stressing him up.
“Now…” Tora’s cough surprised him a bit, revealing his head from his hideout, raising it to face the taller man at the door. Tora’s hazel eyes were wide, their pupils looking around nervously. A foot moving front into a step but then moving back again, a move that was repeated 3-4 times. Saga gulped a laugh back to his throat. Though Tora struggled not to show it, it was visible that the alien scared him greatly with all that touch. He pointed a hand to stop Saga from standing up, that distance between them felt good… And safe.
“Now it’s my turn to do the talking, ok?” he declared with a voice that wouldn’t accept any protests. Saga nodded, making himself comfortable on the bed, ready to hear what Tora had to say. Instead of talking, the taller man searched at his pockets and took out a small white box, throwing it at Saga’s lap. The blond examined it carefully after shooting Tora an odd look-the usually proud man looked rather embarrassed. He stared at the box, shook it up and down, he even attempted to smell it.
“Contact lenses…” Tora explained, not that it changed Saga’s questioning expression at all. “For… your eyes? Man, are you sure you studied our lives at your planet?”
“Yeah I did!” Saga replied tensed, blushing slightly at the smirk Tora displayed. “That’s what I’ve been studying for those years!”
Tora nodded, keeping some thoughts for himself. The alien seemed rather annoyed with that conversation. And still confused with the white box.
“They are brown colored…” The taller man explained further, starting to lose his patience.
“Oh!” Saga gave him an awkward smile, still comprehending his words before he raised his hand to give the box back to the other man. “Thank you but… I prefer my natural color… It suits my hair…”
Facepalm. That’s what Tora wanted to do but he started rubbing the sides of his temple instead, massaging the nerves that were tightening there. Was Saga that stupid or was he playing some kind of role?
“Tell me something, Saga…” Tora growled in warn. “During your studies, have you seen anyone in this planet having violet eyes like yours?”
Saga shook his head quietly. No, he hadn’t seen anyone.
“That’s right, because it is an alien trait!”
The dark-haired man moved nervously up and down, trying to find the right words to say but he had lost any hope that the blond would understand him.
“You still don’t get it? Pretending that you wear lenses is a good excuse, but if you… are willing to live between people openly, you can’t always show your violet eyes! It could give out that something is strange with you… Are you even listening to me?”
Tora furrowed his brows, pouting in front of a gaped Saga, who was staring back at him with his mouth opened, like he was naked! Oh… Did he have to think that?
“Forget it!” he spat nervously, feeling the temperature rising all over his body. “If you don’t care about your safety, I don’t care a million times! And you’ll give me the money for those lenses back!”
He let his words explode out of his mouth like hot lava out of a volcano and stomped out of the room. He was mad. All that time he was trying to explain one simple thing but Saga was just staring stupidly at him. For an alien from a rather evolved planet, Saga was too much of an idiot! Tora plopped on the living room’s couch and let a loud sigh. Ok, it was his fault too, he could choose a better way to explain what he wanted to… He nodded in thought. But… His brows furrowed further. It was mostly Saga’s fault! His and his mind’s, that couldn’t function right! As those hazel eyes were staring blankly around, Tora caught a glimpse of his guitar on the floor, right beside him. An old friend he had forgotten after Saga’s arrival. A small smile enlightened his heavy features as he grabbed it and pulled some strings. A sound he had missed. A sound that was always calming him down.
He let his body rest on the couch while his fingers slid on the metallic lines, creating a soft, beautiful melody, right out of his heart. Saga couldn’t disturb him anymore, not when his mind was not on this world. He was floating away, problems stopped existing for him. He was at peace. And as for Saga… At least he tried…
Back in the bedroom Saga was still dumbfounded. He was shocked, yeah, but not in the bad way. Saga was happy. So happy that nothing could ruin his mood. Because Saga understood everything. The lenses gesture, all that whining, the caring about his safety lecture… Was it maybe a way for Tora to show that he was willing to try and cooperate with him? He didn’t need to be a genius to guess that Tora was too proud for his own good. But was that it?
His thoughts started withering away as a gentle melody fluttered inside the room. A soft melody that only a gentle soul could compose… Or that was at least what Saga wanted to believe.
Giving no more thought to it, the alien stood up in determination. Being wrong or right, he didn’t care. He was going to make a step too, to show Tora that he got the meaning of his actions. Because a simple “thank you” wouldn’t work with him, and wouldn’t be enough either. He grabbed a pillow and a blanket and dashed to the living room. Tora stopped playing immediately, feeling as though his privacy had been violated. His sight fell in question on the things Saga was carrying.
“You are shoving me out that early today?” Although he tried hard, the bitterness in his words was audible.
“No…” Saga answered simply, placing the pillow and blanket on a chair. “Those are for me. You… You’ll sleep inside from now on. It’s-it’s your house after all…”
A brow was cocked in surprise but Tora said nothing. He restarted his playing, more lively, more powerful, more relaxed. Though he restrained his face to show any traits of satisfaction. Saga sat beside him, staring carefully at him. That harmony, that calmness, that hidden kindness, that’s what Saga saw in Tora that night. That’s what he wanted to examine and learn from that man. Strange or not, grumpy or not, asshole or not, Saga was sure now. Hiroto was a friend, a close and interesting one, but he would remain just that, a friend. Tora was Saga’s one and only sample.
“Hey, Tora…”
The other turned his face slowly at him, following the rhythm.
“Hmm?”
“Teach me how to play…”
A new surprise for the dark-haired man. Unexpected. He had already decided before he looked at Saga again, before he displayed a feint smile, before he stopped playing to point at the blond.
“Come here...”
