I feel like a grade A idiot for leaving The Dark is Rising series off my list! They were very strongly influential in my early years when I was starting to write! I actually went out and bought the whole series AGAIN a couple years ago as the original versions had disintegrated on my long ago.
Flowers for Algernon wrecked me the first time I read it. Another one I should have remembered!

Yeah, the short story FfA had the same effect on me, and the novel to a lesser degree.
I reread DIR every now and then when I need it.
I'm sure there's some killer books I left off this list, too. If I'd been including poetry, Fleurs du Mal should certainly have appeared.
