You can tell me if you want. If I do read the 1st book I'm not worried about spoilers since, well, I guess the bulk of the story is already known to me. I imagine there must be new scenes in the TV show since I've heard the books are limited to a handful of POVs.
Was the term 'sexposition' invented by GoT critics? Yes, there were a ridiculous amount of those. It was the low point of the series, along with gratuitous animal butchering scenes.
If only he had done that the first time, really.
Seriously. I'm rewatching now and it's shocking how Ned makes so many stupid pigheaded decisions and misses so many opportunities just because he insists on being honourable. But then, I do like Ned's story because his stupid stubborn honour isn't at all rewarded.
Yes! There were several 'Awesome Protective Direwolf!' scenes I wanted to include but couldn't settle on just one. I liked Nymeria pouncing on Joffrey too. I loved the scene in your icon for the way Cat fought off the assasin too.
I've bought the first two books now but they sound a little less fun than the TV show. The more intimate dialogue scenes like Tyrian's drinking game, Littlefinger and Varys verbal sparing and Jon/Sam's bromance were what I loved most. But the books were on sale so I thought I should try them.
I was saying to elliot 'Song of Ice and Fire' reminds me a lot of my favourite fantasy series 'Gormenghast'. The Gormenghast books are a more gothic than medieval style of fantasy fiction but they are both about power struggles and betrayals. Here's a little clip from the BBC adaptation, which isn't half as good as the HBO adaptation of GoT I'm afraid. But 'Gormenghast' does feature one of the few ships I ship - Steerpike/Fuchsia (btw, Fushsia is meant to be 15 years old but the actress looks nothing like that age). It's a total carcrash ship since Steerpike is secretly plotting against and occasionally murdering Fushsia's family.

I bought the first two books today *blushes* I guess I was itching for a new fandom. GoT is good for me because I like the ensemble of characters and the varied fantastical settings and the dense history and culture of Westeros. Plus, I like that the fandom mostly consists of discussion rather than fic and shipping. And as much as I'm liking The Sopranos, I don't feel 'fannish' about it and there's no active fandom since the show finished so long ago.
As a fantasy saga it reminds me a lot of the Gormenghast trilogy (which I love), since Gormenghast is also low on supernatural elements and focuses more on power struggles between multiple morally grey POV characters. Now I just wish HBO would do a Gormenghast adaptation! I didn't love the campy BBC version, even though it was very well cast.
There is still no date on the DVD release. It will probably come out a month before S2 which is slated for the spring. I'm tempted to re-watch now because it is still showing on HBO here, but I have no time!
Sometimes I don't mind when there is no fandom, like for Sopranos or The Wire. Certain genres do better just inside my head.
Great list! The only one I don't feel particularly attached to is the Jon-Sam bonding. Jon doesn't really start to work for me until, like, the third book, though.
Littlefinger and Varys need their own spinoff.
Amen.
I love Viserys moment of clarity as he realises that his sister is the leader he will never be.
Budding it to say, I felt the same way about Jon. It wasn't until book 3 that I cared very much for him. Though Sam remains awesome from the beginning.

I am in awe of Harry Lloyd, really.

I wasn't that upset about Viserys, but it was sad to lose Harry Lloyd. He played a good creepy lunatic.
