Nine Chapter 10
Jon took a deep breath outside his apartment door.
“Are you going to be alright?” Keith quietly inquired.
Jon nodded. “Yeah. I’ll be fine. Thank you for coming and helping me.”
“I told you before. Anytime, Jon. I mean that.” Keith was only a little surprised by the tight hug the smaller man pulled him into. He wrapped his arms around Jon and rested his chin in the curly hair. He inhaled through his nose and forced himself to not plant a kiss in the dark hair.
Jon pulled away, a smile on his face. “I know how to reach you guys.”
“Good. Now, go apologize to Stephen. And… try to make the best of this,” encouraged Keith.
“I will. See you later.”
“You, too.”
Jon watched Keith go to the elevator, and the doors close after he entered. Jon allowed himself a moment to think before knocking on his door. He had nearly screwed himself over completely. He had needed Keith, and had almost- perhaps not killed him, but seriously injured him. He needed their support and friendship. Nearly killing one of them wouldn’t have one him any of that.
As for forgiving Keith, it had felt so good to do. He couldn’t hate him for biting him. It had been an accident on Keith’s part. As for the vampire who had pulled him into the fight…
Jon sighed and knocked on his door. After a short moment, the door opened to Stephen. He asked, “How are you feeling now? Better?”
“Yeah. I went up to the roof and cooled off. I’m sorry for blowing up at you. I was just-“
“Don’t worry about it. Stress gets to us all, sometimes.”
“There wasn’t really a reason for it. It was just all these mixed-up feelings.”
“That’s alright. We all have our moments.”
“I’m glad you’re so understanding, Stephen.”
“Isn’t that part of my job as a friend?” Stephen replied, lightly punching Jon’s shoulder.
“I suppose it is.”

“How did it go?” was the first thing Keith heard from Dan and Rachel when he entered his house. There was also the sound of something playing on the tv.
Keith replied, “Give me a minute.” He took off his backpack, shoes and jacket, which still smelled faintly like Jon. He went into the living room to find his friends on the couch. Rachel was upside-down on the sofa, eating popcorn.
Keith half-smiled. “Okay, who decided to go through my DVDs and start watching ‘Arrested Development’ without me?”
Dan pointed to Rachel, who protested with, “It was your idea, and you know it.” She threw a handful of popcorn at him.
Dan picked the popcorn from his lap and put them in his mouth. “I would’ve preferred you to pass me the bowl.”
“Anyway,” Rachel reached for the remote and paused the DVD. “Keith, how did it go?”
“Well, I found Jon on the roof of his apartment building,” Keith started.
Rachel quickly turned over to sit upright. “Don’t tell me he was going to jump.”
“No, he wasn’t going to jump. At least, it didn’t look like it.”
Dan and Rachel let out sighs of relief.
“I’m glad I went to see him tonight. He was very hurt and angry. He figured out that I was the one to bite him, and felt betrayed by us because we didn’t tell him.”
“Oh, man. I can only imagine how alone that made him feel,” Rachel commented.
Dan inquired, “What else did he say?”
Keith told his friends what had transpired on that roof. They were quiet until he finished.
Dan let out a low whistle. “The first half sounds intense.”
“Very,” Keith remarked. “I was serious about letting him bite me. For a moment, I thought he was going to do it.”
“It’s great to know that he was able to forgive you,” Rachel commented. “It means that he’s on the right path to accepting this and what it means for his life.”
“What I’m wondering is if we should tell anyone about us,” Dan pondered. “I mean, he wants to tell his friend, should we do the same?”
“Jon lives with Stephen. We were all living alone until we decided to live together. There’s a difference there,” Rachel answered. “Besides, I’ve never felt any pressure to let anyone know.”
“Same here, Dan,” Keith agreed.
“No worries. I don’t really want to tell anyone, either. Just a passing thought.”
“So, how far are you guys in the episode?” Keith asked.
“Just a few minutes. We can restart it, if you like,” Dan said. “But, first, can you make Rachel share the popcorn?”
“No. I told you that you can go get your own,” Rachel responded, holding her bowl closer to her chest.
“But, that’ll take like, three minutes.”
“We can wait.”
Dan grinned and pounced. A yelp of surprise came from Rachel’s mouth as Dan somehow managed to knock her off the sofa without the popcorn spilling.
Keith snatched up the abandoned bowl from the cushion before anything happened to it and they’d have a mess to clean up. With it cradled in his arm, he watched Dan and Rachel roll around and wrestle.
Rachel’s laughs increased pitch as Dan stripped off one of her socks and started tickling the sole of her foot. “No fair,” she said between laughs. “Tickling isn’t allowed.”
“Says who?” Dan responded.
Rachel wriggled out from underneath Dan and flipped them over so that she was on top. “Says me.”
“Oh, really?” Dan tried to roll them back over.
Rachel was straddling Dan’s waist, and dug her knees into his side to stop his efforts. She grabbed hold of his wrists and pinned them above his head. “Yeah. And, I also say you go get your own popcorn.”
Dan laughed as he tried to get from under Rachel. He couldn’t, so he said, “I surrender. I’ll get my own.”
“That’s right,” Rachel asserted, letting go of Dan’s wrists and getting off him. She looked to the couch and asked, “Okay, where’s my popcorn?” A telling crunching sound made her and Dan look to Keith with narrowed eyes.
“What?” Keith put another few pieces into his mouth in a slow and teasing manner. “Oh, I guess you both have to get your own, now.”
Rachel snorted. “Remind me again why I decided living with two men would be a good idea?”
“Because you love us so much?” Dan suggested.
“That might have been it.” Rachel headed for the kitchen. Dan followed a second after.
Keith heard a light smacking sound, followed by an “Ow. What was that for?” from Dan.
“For letting Keith take mine,” was Rachel’s response.
Keith sat on the sofa and pressed a button on the remote to make the paused episode go back to the start. He stared at the frozen screen for a minute, then called, “You guys are taking forever.”
“Stop complaining, KO. It’ll only be a couple more minutes.”
Keith rolled his eyes. As he waited for Dan and Rachel, he hoped that Jon could get to this level of being comfortable with himself and his life.

“I really like you,” Jon said to the woman across the table. “So much, that I could say that I love you.”
The woman coyly smiled. “Could say?”
Jon returned the smile. “I love you. No doubt.”
The woman leaned over the table to meet Jon halfway for a kiss. Jon leaned in as well. Their lips touched.
The kiss had just started to deepen when Jon felt that dull pain in his arm begin. He tried to hold it back, while not pulling away from the woman. He didn’t want her to know that anything was wrong with him.
That control only lasted a short moment. He abruptly pulled away from the woman and fell out of his chair.
“Jon? Jon, are you alright?” asked the concerned voice.
Jon couldn’t open his mouth to tell her to run away. What had triggered it? He wasn’t angry, and it wasn’t the full moon. And, he sure as hell didn’t choose to change.
Jon felt a hand on his shoulder, and he desperately tried to crawl away. His transforming limbs didn’t let him get far.
“Jon, what’s wrong?” The woman gasped when Jon turned to face her, still halfway through the transformation.
Jon wanted to somehow signal to her to get away. But, he couldn’t speak, and he couldn’t give her a sign. Why the hell wasn’t she running away now, without being prompted?
The transformation finally stopped, and the woman was still there, a shocked expression on her face. And then, Jon lost all control.
Jon tackled the woman to the floor and snarled in her face. The woman screamed and tried her best to get away. She pushed his head up and scooted backwards.
Jon howled. He saw the woman scrambling to her feet and making a break for the door. Jon pounced, and caught her, his claws digging into her back. He growled, then bared his teeth. The woman’s screams echoed in his ears as he bit down on the back of her neck. A perfect kill.
Jon woke with a start. He found himself on the couch, facing his open laptop, which was sitting on the coffee table. On the screen was a picture of a wolf and facts underneath.
Jon turned onto his back and nearly jumped at the sight of Stephen, wearing pajamas and hair mussed. He said, “I was just about to wake you up. Sleeping on the couch isn’t good for your neck.”
“What time is it?” Jon yawned.
“Almost two in the morning. Come on, I’m sure your bed is more comfortable.”
“I don’t want to get up.”
Stephen half-smiled. He closed the top on Jon’s laptop and picked his friend up into his arms.
“Why are you carrying me?” Jon sleepily mumbled.
“Because you said you didn’t want to get up.” Stephen didn’t put him down until he went into Jon’s room and reached his bed. “Did you have a nightmare?” he asked, putting Jon down.
“Yeah. Stupid nightmare…” He curled up and almost instantly fell back to sleep. This time, there were no nightmares.
