As far as Lahane, I don't think he's a particularly good writer (I did like his most recent, Any Given Day, it's a historical Boston novel). He is definitely pop writer. I did have a chance to hear him read at a conference, he's very affable and amusing (unlike most writers I've seen read) but overall, I think he's pretty overrated.

I think Lahane could be a perfectly fine neo-noir pulp writer. I certainly like his stuff better than Elmore Leonard's, whose popularity as the go-to cool neo-noir guy, I am continually puzzled by.
