Thoughts on yaoi Dennis Lehane:

Anyone who knows me should know that Shutter Island is, on its face, pretty much up my alley as mysteries go:

I'm so glad someone shares the opinion of Penn in Mystic River as well. Bill Murray should have won.

As far as Lahane, I don't think he's a particularly good writer (I did like his most recent, Any Given Day, it's a historical Boston novel). He is definitely pop writer. I did have a chance to hear him read at a conference, he's very affable and amusing (unlike most writers I've seen read) but overall, I think he's pretty overrated.

Penn in general seems to have adopted Mel Gibson's style of "serious" acting (i.e., if it's not histrionic, it's crap). In general, I find Clint Eastwood's annual, "Give me an Oscar, please!" offerings pretty irksome.

I think Lahane could be a perfectly fine neo-noir pulp writer. I certainly like his stuff better than Elmore Leonard's, whose popularity as the go-to cool neo-noir guy, I am continually puzzled by.
