sleater-kinney apparently broke up last night. they say "indefinite hiatus," but with an official announcement on their page, no plans to record or tour again, and a list of 'final' shows, it sounds like it's pretty definite to me

exactly. i mean its not like i would've died without their influence, but i cant imagine what else i would have been interested in that would even remotely compare in terms of what i've learned and gained from punk/riot-grrrl/etc.
and yeah, they did go on hiatus before, but as they'd announced it they hinted that it was only temporary, saying that corin was pregnant and needed to do that for a while and then be with the baby for a while, etc. this definitely seems different and more final to me :(
i'm thinking about going to one of the last shows, unfortunately several are festival dates which i have no interest in. lollapalooza, me thinks not. anyhow, i was really sad to hear about this yesterday, but on the other hand at least they knew when to throw in the towel. better to go out with one of the best rock albums of the last 20 years than to go the route of oh take your pick...we'll go with black sabbath. i think a slew of crappy albums would've been more devastating to me. besides, after an album like the woods, where do you go from there?
sometimes i get depressed when i think that way, but really sometimes you just know an album is so good it will never be topped, a-la you are free or blacklisted. cat power really should've called it quits before putting out a norah jones album.
anyhow, i'll go back to quietly mourning with the complete S-K discography in chronological order now.
yeah, i know what you mean, and the thought that they're going out in a blaze of musical glory makes the whole thing easier to swallow. you're so right, it's disappointing when a great band/performer fizzles out sadly instead going out when they were high. team dresch is the only example i can think of where i'm glad they didnt right after putting out their masterpiece (because really, captain my captain isnt that great but its still pretty good and i'm glad it exists).
let me know if you decide to come to the philly show!

while i think it may be a stretch to say "punk rock saved my life", i can't possibly imagine who i'd be right now if i'd never found it.
didn't they go on hiatus before?
