Not unexpected, but bad news nonetheless.

Timbuktu mayor: Mali rebels torched library of historic manuscripts.

I hate it when this happens. It's so easy to destroy old things, so difficult to preserve and value them.

Nicholas would be furious.

It is horrific, but not surprising. Year-Zero religious fanatics. I am furious. Very few of these works have been digitised or even listed. This is a deliberate attempt to eradicate the intellectual history of a nation.

Yes to all of that. Historical information is so fragile, so easily lost. We'll never know what we have lost in those manuscripts.
