So Joss Wedon's new show has been announced: it's SHIELD.

I adore S.H.I.E.L.D.. So this should make me very happy, right?

Why am I frowning?

No, really, I'm happy about it, I'm happy. SHIELD. One of my favourite things. It will be a little like having U.N.C.L.E. back.

But...

See, I don't trust Joss Whedon. Some of his Buffy episodes and ( Read more... )

I can't speak to the themes concern, the comedy concern (unless Whedon's channelling Dwayne McDuffie's ghost successfully in the Damage Control vein, in which case, have at it!)...but yeah. There are concerns.

Jackson's going to be out of budgetary reach, unless a Deal Gets Cut. Smulders...well, she's got a commitment to another TV series unless that finally wraps up this year as some suspect it might.

Hernandez and Gregg returning as Sitwell and Coulson?

Possible.

But I would want to fill out my hand with a larger cast.

He could also have other actors playing Fury and Hill, which as far as I'm concerned, would be fine. But it's a hard act to follow, in both cases.

More likely, he'll create a new agent as protagonist - female, I hope - or pick someone from Marvel's already extensive number of possibilities.

As you note, Marvel's got an extensive list of options for Whedon's crew to pick from. I'll make a note on that in a few moments as well.

Non-fan here. I tried to watch Firefly, I really did. It had a wonderfully thought-out background, but the plots were straight off TV Tropes. Dh and I had the same problem we had with the X-Files; we knew how each story was going to end 10 minutes or less into it. And if we already know how it's going to end, why bother watching it?

Fair enough. I loved both X-Files and Firefly, for many reasons, but in general I find that Whedon does something I find most annoying in a writer - he changes characters beyond recognition on a whim.

Reality can do that to people as much as fiction. No more or less annoying and disorienting.

In Whedon's case, I think it's just bad writing - unconvincing. Yes, people change, but usually not without reasons for change.

I kinda know how you feel. I love Joss and he's made some amazing series but I don't love everything. I never watched Dollhouse because it never interested me at all. Joss is one of those writes and powers that be who can do no wrong in some fans eyes. Every writers has good and bad points. Just because Buffy. Angel, Doctor Horrible are brilliant doesn't mean you should just forget about the bad stuff that comes with every series.

Trepidation is not a bad thing to go into with thing like this. Better to be surprised that it turned out good or bad

Joss Whedon is a genius, and all geniuses as wonky.

I must say that his work evokes strong love/hate reactions from me -hence my worry about SHEILD.

I am intensely curious to see what he wants to do
