I went to see X-Men: First Class again today, and I am glad I really did. I'd really missed a lot of the beginning - a lot of the story

Saw it finally! And the german dubbing wasn't too bad. :-)
I think they called it a prequel and a reboot to some extend. It doesn't take X3 and Wolverine into consideration, but took up some points from X1 and 2, at least that's what I read. And the KZ scene at the beginning exactly mirrored X1, only with different actors, and the cameos by Rebecca Romijn and Hugh Jackman, I'd say they try a bit to fit in, but not completely.

That sounds right. Since I enjoyed it so much, I'm happy with most of what they did. So they're making new canon, rebooting it as they wish. That's okay - they've messed with continuity in the comics, too.
