X-Men: First Class...

I loved this movie. I watched it smiling. I loved it on more counts than I can name. I loved the way it was true to the X-Men story, and yet didn't repeat stories I'd already seen, and provided a number of interesting characters. It relied more on character and story than special effects, and yet I liked the special effects as well ( Read more... )

uhm, let's just say that Azazel is part of one of the worst X-men runs in recent history, and that the movie version of him is a huge improvement compared to said storyline....

Just ask anyone about the Draco storyline and Chuck Austin...

Perhaps I skipped the Draco storyline on purpose? There are stories I stopped reading because they were terrible... or possibly I simply pretended it never happened, and erased it from my memory entirely. I can't bear it when X-Men is really bad.

Love your icon.

DUDE. This movie made my Mystique muse loud, and I didn't know she could be loud!

SO much +1 on much of what you said. Also, I had to look up Angel when I got home - it's Angel Salvatore, a.k.a. Tempest. Which made a little more sense. Considering that in my mind, X-Men Angel = Warren Worthington III, and Zoe Kravitz... wasn't. ;) Ahem.

I love Rose Byrne. I hadn't looked up to see she's in the movie, and LOVED the surprise. And her guts. And was HISSING at first 'collateral damage' and then 'women have no place in the CIA' ... ... discrimination against women in jobs that they clearly CAN do, and well, is getting to be a ticky point for me. ;)

Ouf. I kind of want to see it again.

Well! I heartily approve.

It does. I still don't remember her. This calls for a little research of my own.

Yes, Rose Byrne was about perfect. Loved the little antisexist jibes that were both appropriate to the time, and pointed.

Too bad we can't go together to see it again... I really, really do want to get a second viewing in a theatre.

... okay, going to see it together would be totally awesome. I saw it with my colleague, and he's awesome and all, but he's even more ignorant about the comics than I am. >.>

Ahem. Yes. I think I blame James McAvoy's wobbly eyes for Mystique's loud. I mean, I can write her the... much harsher woman she is later, apparently have no problem writing mature, ruthless-to-evil women, but it was the mellower side here which made her click from me. SOMEHOW it makes sense, the arc from the young woman who trusted Xavier, through finding where he let her down, through trusting Magneto, through where she went, after that. Mmm. I should get back to reading the comics, difficult as it may be >.>

Rose Byrne. Mmm. I totally blame the RTD Casanova for my love for her, but she nailed it. GOOD. I love it when things work like that.

And and and. I think I have too much Babylon 5 on my mind. I know the references in Thor were on purpose (because, JMS), but when Schmidt was trying to make Erik move the coin, I don't think that was meant to make me ( ... )

I didn't remember Rose Byrne from Casanova, and didn't recognize her - probably because I watched the whole of that series being starry-eyed madly in love with Nina Sosanya. Thanks for reminding me about Rose Byrne!

The comics are all over the map these days, both in terms of quality and in terms of character, but I'm loving them. Generically. And yes, interesting things happening with Mystique, espeically vis-a-vis her relationships with Wolverine and the members of his family.

I didn't think of the psi corps either, but now you mention it.... Hmm.

I thought Xavier and Mystique were like brother and sister - definitely no sexual tension there.

Oh, no sexual tension at all. But when Xavier said they were "together", and at other moments, I thought there were nuances. I thought it was implied that she kept her white blonde girl look because he liked it. Certainly nothing was spelled out and I'm not commited to this intepretation; but I rather like it. Including the nothing that if it was a sexual relationship, it had already faded and they were ready for a parting of the ways.

It's a Hollywood movie so M would have been a screaming harridan if she would have thought that Magneto was some sort of rival. I really wish Hollywood were actually capable of portraying polyamory but their portrayals for mature monogamy are also so few and far between that I don't have any hopes.

I certainly can't prove anything to the contrary. I wish!

in the comics Riptide has different powers and is part of the Marauders.Yes. Totally confusing. Another character with the same name. Any other ( ... )

On seeing it again, I saw aspects to the Xavier/Mystique relationship I'd missed before. For instance, first time round I hadn't seen the scene where he said she was his best friend and he didn't/wouldn't have sexual feelings for her ( ... )
