Groundhog Day. A movie - a good one - that sparked a slew of excellent copies, and some fine fanfic. Making déjà vu a literary genre ( Read more... )

I think the secret on a snowy day is that it isn't so bad if you CAN walk to your destinations and not have to drive.

Exactly - it's the driving that's really appalling. Luckily, there was nothing I really had to do outside a radius of about two miles.

Groundhog Day originated with the Pennsylvania Germans. The groundhog (otherwise known as the grundsow in the local dialect) is supposed to NOT see his shadow. That means we'll have an early spring. If he sees it, it scares him and he runs back into his hole to hide from another six weeks of winter.

I've heard the explanation. It just never made much sense to me, from first premise to conclusion. Good movie, though.

You want folkloric prognosticators to make sense? What fun would that be?

It has never made sense to me either. It seems to say that if the weather is bad on February 2nd, then it will be good for the next six weeks but if the weather is good on Feb 2nd, then it will be bad until mid-March.

I'll settle for the groundhog being right this year, whether it makes sense or not. I'm quite ready for spring. Having various amounts of snow and ice fall every couple of days disrupts my plans and complicates everything.

I demand accuracy of my folklore! I'd forgive the groundhog anything if he could make spring come more quickly - but he never does. Silly shyster, promising what he can't deliver....

I'm ready for spring, too. We had a few warm days and suddenly I was dreaming of flowers and sunshine. I look out my window today and all I see is snow - snow on the ground, snow piled up in snowbanks, snow on the trees, snow falling and falling and falling some more.

Bring on the spring! Soon.
