A 007 Christmas...

I'm playing a CD that's a compendium of Christmas music. The current song is "From Russia With Love". Why is that a Christmas song?

Not a problem... I like it... just puzzled.

music, christmas

Um...

...no, I'm stumped. Some association with Russia and snow and therefore Christmas?

Or maybe it was released at Christmas time originally? The Power of Love by Frankie Goes to Hollywood shows up on a lot of Christmas albums here because it was a Christmas number one and it's not Christmassy either.

Who knows what lurks in the minds of CD producers?

IIRC, the video for The Power of Love showed a nativity scene with the band as angels and/or wise men. Whether it was originally intended as a Christmas song or they just did the video that way to cash in on the market, I don't know.

Either way... I can't see that "From Russia With Love" fits the pattern. It's a love song. (And not religious love, either.)

My husband is a Bond-phile, we danced to From Russia with Love as our first dance at our wedding reception.

“That’s a nasty little Christmas present, but I shouldn’t think I need it on this assignment.”

That's a quote from the movie, referencing a can of *exploding* talcum powder in a briefcase full of awesome spy toys. It's a bit of a reach, but it's all he could come up with! There's really no reason for that song to be on a Christmas compendium.

Yes, but, really, congratulations - you found a Christmas connection! Well done!

The song doesn't need to justify itself - I love it at any season. I just didn't expect it on that CD.

No idea. When I was in the US with my family some ten years ago, I was always bemused by the fact that "My Favourite Things" from the Sound of Music was considered a Christmas song.

People are unfathomable sometimes.

"My Favourite Things"? Well... I suppose it could be seen as a variant of a Christmas wish list.

I like your icon.

I guess so. We thought it was because of the snowflakes line.

Thanks, I'm quite fond of it - it manages to be Christmassy without being wintery.

Yes, I like that. And I tend to think of The Sound of Music as a good movie to watch at Christmastime (maybe I'll treat myself) even though it isn't specifically a Christmas movie.
