That would be fun, in its way - but I'm not one of the fans who wants to see a female Doctor. (Again.) And if we were to get a female Doctor, I want Diana Rigg, Yasmin Bannerman, or Whoopie Goldberg.
I have heard nothing but good of Mark Rylance from a zillion sources, and it is one of my great regrets that I never saw his Hamlet. But I've never seen the man in anything, so I can't judge how he'd be. On reputation alone, I have no problem with that idea at all.
You should totally get commodorified to show you his Richard II! He is fantastic in that even though his interp of the character is waaaaaaaaay off of mine. You can also see him in Angels and Insects, Intimacy, and Prospero's Books, or if you get stuck in a situation where you're watching The Other Boleyn Girl for some reason, he is by far the best thing about it.

What, she has it? And she never told me? The fiend! We must rectify this a.s.a.p., though she'll be out of town all November. Drat. Maybe a pre-Christmas viewing?
I was thinking we should watch more Shakespeare, and it's a while since I've re-watched The Merchant of Venice or Richard III. Oh, to find the time...!
Michael Praed as Robin Hood (back in the mid 80's) was one of the most watchable men I've ever seen in a tv show. Couldn't take your eyes off him. Worth watching the show just for glimpses! No idea what he's like 20 years later, but willing to take a look!
I loved Michael Praed in Robin of Sherwood - he was the best thing about the show - and I thought he had incredible presence in a small teen role in The Professionals. But most of all I loved him when I saw him on stage in a Daphne du Maurier thriller.
Judging by his recent pictures, he still looks good, and I bet his acting is more than up to it.
for your first two choices. Robert Carlyle made The Last Enemy as far as I was concerned, and even scruffy and deadly he was sexy as hell. Peter Woodward was terribly interesting, charismatic and compelling once upon a time in Crusade as a technomage. At least I think Galen was a technomage.
Yes, he was. And he acted circles around everyone else in the show. Peter Woodward also has an impish, infections sense of humour that reminds me of David Tennant.
But the death (...ish - I assume) of the title character is pretty much the biggest thing that can happen in the story, isn't it? I know the BBC doesn't see it that way, or doesn't care - I guess it's still hard for me to get used to though. Your post was the first place I saw this news or even any hint of it, so I had that initial punched-in-the-gut reaction. I apologize, I know my phobia is fringe and I try not to let it get the better of me.

I'd say no, not in Doctor Who, any more than in Torchwood. If the Doctor dies, he regenerates. If Captain Jack dies, he recovers and comes back to life. I've already seen the Doctor die twice on Doctor Who, and an implied third time. (We never actually saw the implied death and regeneration of Eight.) Can't even count how many times we've seen Captain Jack die.
So what we're talking about is not the death of a character, but the replacement of an actor, which has a different sort of impact. The thing is not that something is ending but that something is changingWhy do you feel punched in the gut? There has been talk and speculation about David Tennant leaving since before he got the role, as well as speculation about who could replace him. Is it that Ten is your favourite Doctor, or that you like Tennant as an actor? Do you think it won't be the same without him

I wasn't serious about Joanna, even though she is kind of my favourite Doctor...

I think so. She's so cute when she's being comedic or evil. Did you see her Mrs Bradley Mysteries? Brilliant, I thought.
Joanna Lumley was cute as the Doctor in the role she had, but no one was serious about it, least of all her and her Director...
