My dad decided he had Gout for a while. He went to the doctor, and the test for gout came back negative. He decided that the test was wrong, and this was one more incident in the mounting pile of evidence that doctors are bullshit.
Later, he stopped taking some weird supplement, and the i-gout went away. The "i" is for "imaginary."

My father has become one of the self diagnosed as well. I would suggest we get our fathers together for a playdate, but that might exacerbate the situation.

For real. But I might just spend my Friday night hogtying my father and dragging him to an ER. I mean, I get that he's kind of broke*, but that stuff can become chronic and all kinds of mean uglies.

*my father is very secretive about his money, so who the hell knows if he can afford insurance or not. he is a very worrysome old man.

Tell him it's just one blood test, Uric Acid. If you take him to the ER they'll want to run more (like a chemistry and blood count) but if it is gout he can take something like Indocin (generic: Indomethacin, read= cheaper) and it'll clear up quickly. Oh yeah, and tell him to lay off the meats like liver and such...they make the gout worse.
