Well, hell -- How do I get suckered into design projects when I have Christmas knitting to start?

Sep 26, 2005 12:42

So, a girl posted to one of my knitting communities asking about making a hand-knit belly-dancing scarf. And despite our pleas to go visit crochet, where you can make things more easily from cotton, which doesn't stretch nearly as badly as wool, she insisted that it had to be a knitted hipscarf thingie. Which means that there is now only one thing I can ( Read more... )

I've seen hips scarves in stretchy and non stretch material. Velvet to silk, so its really up to you. The Arabic Bazaar has several good samples you can look at. Its off of 51st street and Duval (the one in Hyde park... not the one you live near)

Oooh, thank you!! Pics help muchly :)

The reason I'm concerned about stretchiness is that knitted things can stretch out of shape very easily, and if they stretch too much they can snap and break. And lace tends to be extra delicate and prone to snagging.

If I get some silk and start playing with it, would you be willing to be my test subject/model? There might be a fancy new handmade hipscarf in it for you if we come up with a good pattern!

Hip scarfy goodness:

as a wearer...

I LOVE my long rectangle one with all the beading and coins. as long as the Coins and beading do NOT go all the way across...if it does, it because a pain in the heiny to tie.

I loathe my triangle one with beads and coins, BECAUSE The beading goes all the way across....

OTHERWISE...i love my triangle shawls and they are what I most often wear.

NOW...if you want some fun, and if the dancer is into Tribal or Fusion dancing...you would do a thin 6-8inch LONG rectangle to go around the waist, and have about 5-7 triangles filled with beading and stuff that hang off the end of that...looks a bit like a Toran. Fun stuff and lots of chance of beading design potential.

Classical Cabaret colours are ANYTHING...in fact, there is a book out that suggests that "she who has the most obnoxious colour combination, WINS!" so the colours are SO very ok and fun!

Oooh, good to know -- I'll make a note to leave the top few inches bead/coin free so it can be tied! And sari silk gives an insane colour combo, and no two skeins are ever alike, so that should work! I'm really comitted to using silk (which I just won 1000 grams of!) since it's unlikely to break or stretch as much as wool or even cotton.

I like the idea of a rectangle with a bunch of triangles attached -- I'll have to experiment, maybe I can make a few different styles!

just make sure that the Tie part is bead free....

so in coining and beading, perhaps only worry about doing....what...30-35 inches...the part that would cover the hips and heiny....

Sounds like this is going to be fun!!!!!!!!!!!! cant wait to see what you come up with!
